Once again the UPEI Panthers showed that they are a force to be reckoned with. In the first home ame of the season, the Panthers attle_d to a 22 - 21 win over the

St. Francis xavier X-Men at Mac— ' Adam field last Saturday afternoon

The ame was played under very mrserab e conditions. A biting wind and chilling rain persisted during the encounter. But the avid enthus- iasm displayed by the fans in attend- ance were a great 'help in cheering the Panthers to their victory.

In the first quarter of the game, the Panthers were kept in their own end of the field by the powerful X- ~Men. The only scoring of this uar- ter occurred when Conney 0 St. F.X. kicked the ball behind the

The quarter-back John Dionisi op- ened the scoring for the home team with a touchdown. Mencuso kicked 'a convert and Read kicked the ball on a subsequent play which scored a touchback for the Panthers. This tied the score. U.P.E.l. then took the lead with a touchdown by Yost and a convert by Manucso. Two St.

F.X. players were injured at the end of I the ‘seeond quarter, however this

did not alter the 15-8 score in fav- our of the Panthers.

team met with a surprising amount of success in the RBI. Men’s Invita- tional Soccer Tournament held in Summerside. Entered in the annual event were six teams from two prov-

inces. Of particular significance to

the young and inexperienced PAN- THERS (there are no seniors on the team) was the fact that Mount Allison, an established veteran of soccer, played at the ‘Intercollegiate level, had two teams entered in the two day event.

Having had little experience play- ing together as a team, the fledgling PANTHERS went into their first

game (against the so—called Mt. A.

their Number One team) not know- ing what to expect. U.P.E.I. started slowly in the first half but managed to get a goal from Barry Hogan. In the second half the complexion of game changed as the PANTHERS, sporting a 1-0 lead, began to apply

field. Yost scored a touchdown.

Then 'Manucso- scored the winning pornt by kicking a convert. The

Panthers held on to this lead for, the rest of the game. The only

threat came in the last minute of the ame when the X-Men started to a Vance toward the U.P.E.I. goal

line. This attempt was thwarted by the Panther’s Richards, who inter- cepted the ball at the 53 yard line. The Panthers ran out the clock to assure them the victory.

for U.P.E.I.’s overtime victory. Barry Hogan kicked the winning goal.

Such is the past. This week the Island Senior Soccer League resumes play for the fall season. Four teams, including C.F.B. Summerside, are entered to date. SucceSs for the U.
