GHORGH BROWN.

Tuis great journalist and political leader passed away on Sunday morning last. The death of such aman is a cause for deep regret throughout Canada ; and the feeling will be intensified by the melancholy way in which it was brought about. Struck down by the hand of an inebriate assassin —through ne fault of his, # victim of strong drink —the fate of the leading editor of Canada—the foremost member of the Re- form Party—one of the most vigoreus, energetic and powerful of men—is pecu-

liarly sad and lamentable.

Mr. Brown was born in Edinburgh, on the 20th of November, 1818. With his father he, in 1838, emigrated te New York. In 1843, he moved to Toronto and estab- lished The Banner, an independent organ of Liberal Presbyterian views. In 1844, he founded The Globe, and in 1864 The Canaca Farmer, As editor of these papers he wielded immense influence throughout Ontario and Quebec. While the Reform Party were in power, he was emphatically ** the behind the throne, greater than the throne itself.” His life and pub- lic services are thus sketched in The Par-

‘‘Is now Managing Director of ‘ Globe Printing and Publishing Company ;” and largely engaged in stock raising. A mem- ber of the Senate of the University of Toronto. Was a member of Commission to inguire into certain alleged abuses in the manawenient of the Provincial Penitentiary, Kingston, 1849. Was for many years leader of the Reform party of Upper Canada, and as such called on to form a Government fer late Province of Canada, 2nd Aug., 1858, which he suceeeded in doing in co-operation with the Hon. A. A. (now Chief Justice) Dorion. Before it was possible for the members of his Administration to be re electei, the House of Assembly passed a vote of want of confidence. He consequently determined to dissolve Parliament, but the Governor-General (Sir Edmund Head) re- fused to grant a dissolution, when Mr. Brewn and his colleagues at once resigned. He again entered Executive Council, 50th June, 1864, asa member of the Adminis- tratier. formed to carry eut the scheme of Confederation. Being leader of the Reforin section, then in a majority in the House, as Mr. Macdonald was leader of the Ontario Conservatives, and Mr, Cartier of the French-Canadian Conservatives. Mr. Brown had, in the session of 1864, obtained a Select Committee te enquire into and re- port upon such changes in the constitution as might satisfy the just expectations of Western Canada. ‘The committee reported in faver of 2 Federal system, such as was afterwards established. He resigned 21st Dec., 1878, after the Confederation scheme was arranged, though the Imperial Act was not passed, owing to his disapproval of the policy of the Government, with reference toa Reciprocity Treaty with the United States. Was a member of the Char- lottetown Union Conference, 1864, of that of Quebec in the same year, and of the Confederate Council of B. N. A. Col- onies for the negotiation of Commercial Treaties that sat in the latter city, Sept., 1865. Proceeded to England as a delegate on public business, 1800, and to Washing- ton, March, 1874, on behalf of Canada and the Empire, as joint Plenipotentiary with Sir Edward Thornton, to negotiate with the Government of the United States, a cemmereial treaty. Declined the Lieuten- ant Governorship of Ontario, 1875. Sat for Kent in Canadian Assembly from general election, 1851, to general election, 1854; for Lambton from latter date to general election, 1857, when returned for North Oxford and the City of Toronto (elected to sit for Torente); for South Oxford from March, 1863, until the Union. Was an unsuccessful candidate for Haldimand, April, 1851 ; for Toronto East, at general election, 1861; and for Seuth Ontario in House of Commons, general election, 1867. Called to the Senate, 16th December, 1873. A Liberal.”

The Fishery Award.

Tux editor of the Patriot has returned from Ottawa, ‘‘ like a giant refreshed with wine.’ Heisnow vigorously engaged in the wupatriotic task of making the Istand’s claims to a share of the Fishery Award a party matter. Now, if there be a question on which the people of this Province should stand as one man, it is this question ; and the fact that Mackenzie and Blake, and the Oppesition generally, are as opposed to the recogiition of our claim as the Government -—the fact that both parties in Parliament are opposed to us-—sheuld incite us to con- eentrate our efforts in the endeavor to ob- tain that which we to be our right.

But the object of the editor of the Patriot is to promote divisions. Nothing that has been done by the members of the Liberal Conservative party, has, accorling to the Putriot, been done right. A'priacipal ground ef complaint is that our claim was never decided upon, in Parlia- ment, on its own merits. If it were ex- pedient to bring the matter to a vote in the

[tative ef the Province ; and if the Liberal- Conservative members of the House are blameworthy,Mr. Yeo is also to be censured, But does not the editor of the Patriet see that had a decision been given during the late session, it would surely have been given against us ! Does he not see that we should now have an ‘‘ adverse vote” to contend we have to overcome? To have brought the question te a vote in Parliament, in the existing state of opinion regarding it would be sheer madneas.

its merits, is not correct. it has been very ably argued, last year as well as this year, by Messrs. Hackett, Mut- tart, McDonald and Brecken. But, of course, the readers ef the Patriot know nothing of this. No speech of a Liberal Conservative on this question has, we be- lieve found its way into the columns ef the Patriot.

We are not contending that the case has been so well managed as it might have been. Perhaps Messrs. McIntyre, McFadyen, McGill, Sinclair and Perry would have done better than the gentlemen whom the people have honored with their contidence have done. Everyone knows that the oratory and statesinauship of the politicians named are of avery high order. Perhaps they would have drawn away the , prize in spite of all such men as Alexander Mc- Kenzie, Edward Blake and Jehn A. Me- Donald might say or do. But we don'st it !

The schooner ‘‘Onward,” owned by the Squarebridge Brothers, is now loaded with potatoes and oats fer Halifax. ‘The Messrs. Squarebridge are also finishing a new wharf and deserve the thanks of the public for build- ing it, as it is*going to save Stanley Bridge from damage and injury from vessels and storms.

The junior partner of the firm of MeMillan & Brown has retired from business. The business will, in furvre, be conducted by the senior partner on a healthy basis.

The post office is stillinthe old place. It is satisfacto: y te know that Mr. McMilan has secured the services of a competent assistant to take charge of it, viz., Mr. A. J. McLeod, from Belfast.
