London, Eng. — You don't have to be “horsey” to wear tweeds in Britain now. They have come right out of the paddock and into iown for smart wear.

The tweed suit which used to be kept for country week ends or for long tramps across moors now has to double for formal duty. Tailor- ed tweeds take their place beside duvateens, baratheas. and velours for day wear. And I have seen a light tweed jacket worn over a black velvet skirt-a suit whicn is suitable for an afternoon's shop- ping or informal evening party.

i Subdued Patterns, Colors

Tweeds have, in consequence, been modified for this dual career. They have become finer, smoother, often more subdued in pattern and color. Bright penny checks have given way to some extent to hound's tooth. to bird's eye, or to soft pastel mixtures.

In a “Drury" suit at Debenham and Freebodys. for instance, soft blues merge with maroon to give the appearance of pale mauve stripes which were used horizont- ally on the suit coat and vertically on the flared skirt.
