MONTREAL (GP) —- Prices were moving cautiously and ir- regularly upward as the Mont- treal and Canadian stock ex- changes closed Friday. Volume was brisk, especially in the mines and oils. . ‘ 5

But Stelco was featured in the market and in hiactiye steels, dropping a point to 61%.

Base metals, papers and mis- cellaneous issues were firm. Most gains ranged to 1/4 but Bathurst 'B at 197/: and Massey-Ferguson all: 8 3—8 gained 3-8 each.

Utilities and the oil-s and pipe- lines eased, led by Showing-an at 25%. Consumers’ Gas at 31 and BA Oil at 41 1-2, off 3-3 each. 46inch of Montreal slipped ‘ to

He faces extinction—no ' one knows why. A. group of British experts has reported “a calamit- ous-decrease” in the nullle of white stories in Europe. .1

Egged on by the serious of the picturesque creature, bird lovers of the world are uniting in a savethestork drive.

Starks, as its well known, bring babies. Also, it is widely‘believed, they bring good fortune to the man on whose land they dhoooe to live. - , ' BIRD LOVERS MEET

Men and women travelled all the way from Angentina, the United States and Japan for this year’s session in Finland of the International Committee for Bird Preservation, which has sections in 45 countries. High on the agenda was the stock.

“We need more precise know- ledge of the tragedy which is be- falling storks,” says Miss Phyllis Barclay-Smith, secretary of the British section of the committee. “We have some smpictons, but not enough facts yet, to make ;overnments and men indignam, and move them to do smoothing about i ."

Storks may be dying out ‘llllom eating poisoned locusts. Starks migrate to northern, central and eastern Africa for the ,winlter. They fly into locust country, in which international agencies spread tons of poison to control the devastating swarms of ill- sects. Starks regard grassho'p- pens as a delicacy, and possibly they eat too many of the mis- oned ones for their own EVIDENCE CONFLICTS

“There is conflicting evidence,” says Miss Barclay-Sandi. “Locust eradicators' must, of course, do their work, and most of them in. sist that they do everything pos- sible to protect innocent life . . . . I “But we aren’t sure, and what we need is hundreds and hun- dreds of autopsies on storks which 7die in Africa to determine whether poisoning is an import- ant factor.” 1

Shooting, particularly in France Spain and Lebanon, accounts for the destruction of some storks.

Some ornithologists think storks are not very bright and, they have curious prejudices. They don’t, for instance, like the British Isles. One explanation for this anti-British feelng is that storks won’t flyover stretches of open water and. the English channel 15 too wide to suit them.

AMOS MONAGHAN

A better man never lived or died were the comments of sev— eral of his New Wiltshire friends on the morning of the funeral of MT. Amos Monaghan.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Monaghan of Kelly‘s Cross, he attended the village school there, then under the prin- cipalship of the late Mr. Jos. De- vereaux. From there he took en-

, trance to P.W. College and pass-

ed successfully with a second class license.

He taught school in different Karts of the Island for a .few years but at length turned his mind to telegraphy.

After receiving his certificate dram the Railway he was sent to relieve agents when on holi- days, He was finally appointed station agent at Vernon and re- mained there for 1‘ time, where he was appointed to New Wilt- shire where’he remained until

, he had to accept a pension at

the age of 65.

It almost broke his heart to have to give up his work. He thought he was a better man at 65 than he was at 30 or 35. He wa-ssrespected by young. and old. He. never turned anyone down and many a dollar he gave to those whom he thought were in need. When anyone went alter freight, even though it was after hours, do you think he’d send

them away? No—he would gladly

go up to the station and hand it out.

About a year and a half ago he had to undergo a serious oper- ation. He never fully recovered. His Wile predeceased him a little over a year ago.
