Tue St. Lawrence Hotel, one of the finest hotels in this city, was re-opened on Wednes- day. The premises have been engaged by Mrs. Robinson whe has been for several years the popular proprietor of the Robinson House, Prince Street. The St. Lawrence Hotel is conveniently situated for passengers by rail- way orby steamers. ‘Transient and permanent boarders will find ample accommodation here, and we bespeak for the new regime a share of public patronage and encouragement.

A MAN by the name of Marshall living in Moncton, N. B., shot his wife through the neck, early yesterday morning. Marshall being a dissipated idle fellow, his wife was obliged to leave him. Angered at this he entered her house, and asking her to go and live with him which she refused, he drew a revolver, fired and ranaway. The unfortunate victim lies in a very critical condition which will probably prove fatal. Marshall eseaped but is being pursued, and will doubtless be

He is a native of that city, being a son of the Hon. Benjamia Davies, and elder brother of the Hon. L. H. Davies, M. P., ex-premier of Prince Edward Island. The numerous fmends of Commander Davies in Halifax have been glad to welcome him on the North American station; and as he is the first Islander who has risen to rank in her majesty’s navy, he will be cordially wel-

O'Donneils Statement, Lonpon, Sept 4. O'Donnell has made a statement by which he says that Carey and he were sit- ting together in the cabin of the steamer, that Carey began to fasten a quarrel upon him, when O'Donnell remarked about the rumor that Power, by which name Carey shipped, was Carey; whereupon Carey and he started up, each witha pistol drawn. O'Donnell gripped Carey by the collar and then fired. Carey dropped his pistol and not being fatally shot the first time he tried to pick up his pistol on the floor, when O'Donnell fired again. Oats are beginning to move pretty briskly. Market price, thirty-four cents per bushel.

Everybody was giad to hear of the arrival in the ‘“‘Gut” of the brigt. ‘‘New Era” owned by Hon. D. Gordon. She was upwards of fifty days coming across.

Friday and Saturday, twenty-first and twenty-second, uit., reminded us of old times. Looking out in the harbor you could see a fleet of American fishing schooners laying at their anchors where they had run in for shelter.

The United States man-of-war ‘‘Swatara” paid usa short visit, going out of the harbor every morning for target practice, and returning in the evening.

Queen’s wharf needs repairing for the fall shipping.

The steamer “Beaver” leaves every Mon- day night for the Magdalen Islands. The Captain reports the heaviest gale of wind he ever witnessed, on last week’s trip.

The Patriot makes great howling about the appointment of the Hon. A. J. Mc- McDonold to a seat in the Executive Council. It says if the electors had a chance now to decide, he would not repre- sent one-third of the district. I do not think the ex-Governor represented many more at the last Dominion Election or he would not have been returned to the occupation suited him best, viz, a Grit journalist. The late editor of the King’s County Advertiser did not make such a show at the last local election. It is true he was returned, but it was home.

Great temperance rally on Wednesday, the third inst. The lovers of temperance ane the public at large, are cordially invited to attend the meeting at half-past seven p- m.

British Trade.

for the first eight months of the present year contains some items of more than passing interest. A summary shows that the aggregate trade of the United Kingdom, inwards and outwards, was £446,275 ,233, as compared with £4365,572,996, in the same period of last year. For 1883 the exports have been £159,000,000 a decrease of two millions, and the imports £187 ,000,000, an increase of nearly thirteen millions. Then to this may be added the reexport of foreign and colonial produce, which were forty one million pounds.

The decline in exports was most largely in those to the United States and the British possessions in America and else- where. To Russia, Germany, Holland and France, the exports have declined also, but to all other European countries they were increased. Egypt showed a decided increase. as did India, but Brazil, China and Australia went nage i
