The monetary crisis in the United States has affected Halifax somewhat. Capital is in great demand there, and mercantile stock is pressed into market to raise money. Some | parties here, as might be expected, take advantage of the | existing state of affairs, and draw money from local insti- tutions, to use in speculation. Consequent on these and other movements, the Banks greatly limit, or stop, discuunting, and searcity of money and difficulty accordingly is experienced. One result, of painful character, is that several persons | engaged in the Labrador fishery find themselves at the market and with cargoes, but without sales,—or without sales except at a disastrously low price. This, subsequent to the toils, | and risks of a voyage,—and. then subsequent to the catch | aud hopes of remunerating returns,—affords subject for regret and sympathy.— Halifax Sun,

Sreawen ms rue Gicte.—We understand the Government of Canada have appointed the handsome sum of £5000) annually, towards supporting a steamer to ply between Quebec, Gaspe and Shediac. We hope this will be the means of inducing the Legislature of this Province to act in a like liberal spirit, to open up a communication by steam, between the Ports on the Gulf Shore. We trust the inhabi- tants of Kent, Northumberland, Gloucester and Restigouche, will not neglect to urge this important subject on their consi- deration. It will not do for us to remain stationary while | all our neighbours are progressing ouwards in the march ot improvement.— Miramichi Gleaner.
Miss MacMcrray’s Draw:ya Acapemy.—We were very much gratified, the other morning, in paying a visit to this young lady’s Academy, and examining, not only her own specimens, but also the works of her diiferent pupils. Miss MacMarray is quite an enthusiastic artist; isa great profi- cient in chalks and painting, and appears to take great delight in teaching others the rudiments and principles of her pro-, fession. W here all her pupils are succeeding so well, it might | appear invidious to name any; but we were particularly | struck with the finish and touch of the productions of the | Misses Heartz, Ramsay and Purdie. We have very great | pleasure in recommending Miss MacMurray as a teacher ; | and we hope that she will be so eneouraged as to be induced | to remain in this city, and impart instruction in her ar |

Acctipext.—Capt. Robertson, of the schooner Ploughboy, | which arrived here from Pictou, on Monday last, reports— that on Sunday evening, when about 15 miles south of Point Prim, it blowing heavy, with a great sea,a young man, named Themas Drinkwater, of Ariebat, while standing to leeward of the mainsail, was knocked over by the sail; every effort was made to rescue him, but without success, and in a few moments all traces of him were lost. He was a sober young | man, and much esteemed by all on board.—Pro.

Reies.—The objects of this Society are—to sel! clothing to the pour | ata ‘wall redaction, or for their use at cost prieg;.and to encourage | habits of industry among them by paying them in clothing for work done.
That the funds-of the Seciety be kept up by subscriptions in money or material, and by the sule of clothing.
That every subscriber have the privilege of getting garments for dis- tribution to the value of half their subscription.
That the ladies in committee have the power of giving away clothing to the very destitute and deserving.
That the meetings of the Suciety be held when practicable once a fort- night, for eight months in the year, at the houses of the members of the | committee.
That the meetings commence at 34 o’clock and close with prayer at 9}; and that some portion of the evening be occupied in profitable reading.
