The wire-pullers are busy at Washington, and President-making has taken precedence of more important measures. Great efforts are being made to commence the Presidential campaign, for all the para- phcrnala of slumpers are to be immediately in support of lllell’ rcepectivc candidates. The Union Whigparty, (now in pow- er) , are likely to rally for their favorite soldier, Gen. Scott, whose views are favorable to the support of the compromise measures, (on slavery) as well as to his opposition to Kos- sullt’u doctrine of non-intervention; his clittnce is good. The young Dr-morrscy or manifest-destiny party are canvassing the country in support of their young progressive Leader, Judge D.-uglars of Illinois, who has taken a bold stand in favour of

naruth and non-intervention, he is the first candidate from the “ Far West," and considering the high estimation in which he is ltcld as a Senator of forty, by the young men of the whole country, and the fact that the Democrats have majorities throughout the Union, he will be a formidable candidate. The “ Colonial Reciprocity," will undoubtedly be modified this Ses- sion. Thcre appears to be a fraternal feeling throughout the whole coutilry in favour ofits modification, and the fishermen of Ca e Cod have petitioned Congrr-ssin favor of“ Free Trade" and Free Navigation, and especially. that the restrictions on the fishing ground, and the total abolition of the light money shall be a sine qua non. if an alteration may take place; inlhs meantime, ruflicient discrimination will be observed in the ar- ticles to be thus admitted, to prevent European manufacturers from entering into clandestine trade via the Colonies.
