A late English paper tells of ajolte lately played upon a jolly old worthy of the city of Glasgow, Scotland, too good not to be narrated. The subject ot‘the joke was an inveterate disciple ofthe Bacehanalian'school, who had laid seige to the bottle and barrel for several days. Some of his red-nosed companions being aware of the circumstance, and thinking that lie was doing it rather too hard, agreed upon trying an experiment to frighten him into a more sober way. Night being fixed upon for thejoke,nway they went to the inn and there they found his worship in a back parlor, quite intoxicated and fast asleep.—'.Vhilstin this situation, he was taken and placed lull-length inside a coffin, which had been procured forlhejob. Having slept in this receptacle for the dead for some three or tour hours, he awoke, and upon raising himselfup,he gazed about him; first on one side of the coffin and then on the other, muttering to himself as he viewed the melancholy piece of furniture. ‘ Where am I 2 Where'have I gotten to!’ While saying this, a tall,‘ portly-looking figure, shrouded in a white sheet, walked from a large cup-board,faintly whispered, ‘ You are dead.’ ' Dead !’ said the dis- ciple of Bacc‘hus,fixing his eyes‘s‘tedfastly upon the object before him ; ‘Ay, and hoo long hae l been dead ?’ ‘A week,’ answered the ghost. ‘ An’ are ye dead, too 2’ ‘ Yes,’ replied the spectre.- ‘ Heclt, sirs, an’ how long. hoe ye been dead, I say l’-—‘ A fortnight, ‘ responded t‘he interrogator, putting his honditito his packet, ‘ ye ken this place better than] do,bring. ustwa bottle 0’ yill. A very little girl, who often read her Bible, gave proof that she understood her obligation to obey its precepts. A LADY.

A lady on her way from Edinburgh to Glasgow in the stage coach, was very much annoyed by a young military officer. whose conversation was interspersed with oaths. The lady sat very uneasy till she could no longer keep silence. ‘Sir,’ said she to the ollicer. ‘ can you talk in the Gaelic tongue.” To this he replied in the'aflirmative, seeminglv with great pleasure, expecting to have some conver- sation with the lady in that dialect. She then politely requostetl that ifhe wished to swear any more, it might be in that language. as the practice ofswearing was very offensive to herself and the rest of the company. The officer was confound- ed at this smart reproof. and no more oaths were heard from him during the re- mainder of the journey.

AN AGED HERMIT.
