Canadian Farmers.

Had Sir Richard Cartwright attended the

j iL annual meeting of the Merchants Bank of

Canada, the address of the general manager would certainly have been followed by a big row. Mr. Hague’s remarks upon the condition of the farmers, referring in most cases to the province of Ontario, were par ticularly interesting. ‘‘The past year,” begins the general manager, ‘‘has not been supposed to be a year of much saving with farmers, but it is a fact that out of 29 branches where farmers’ deposits are re

there been a decrease, and that only of a small amount. I have no doubt that this experience has been common. The whole deposits of the country iu the banks and in Government and other savings banks a year ago were $213,000,000. They now amount to $231,000,000. 1 have little doubt that a large proportion of this in- crease belongs to farmers.”

Mr. Hague appends a few remarks of the bank's managers on the business of their own localities. The information is both interesting and valuable.

Alchough the scandal connected with the Allan-Hebden elopement is gradually drop- ping from the public mind, the relatives feel keenly the disgrace that has been brought upon them. Young Allan’s esca- pade has cost $20,000 a year, that being his salary previous to the scandal. He has been disinherited, too, and though he has a little money of his own, it wiil not be very long with his and his paramour’s expensive tastes before the bottom of the purse is reached and the guilty couple are reduced to the painful necessity of working for a living.

It has been learned that the eloping pair went firat to the Pacific coast. During their short stay in Southern California they met a chance acquaintance and immediately disappeared again, they are in a secluded New Brunswick town. It was by the merest chance that a

Great was the astonishment of the assembled brethren when the deputation returned with the news that the president of the general conference declared that he had _ been insulted, and that he refused to meet the members or attend the meeting, Dr, Douglas would not accept Methodist hospitality, but went toa hotel. He refused to preach, and a New Brunswick minister was cailed upon at short notice to fill the gap. The insulted dignitary did not even attend service in a Methodist building, but went toa Presby-, terian church, where, however, as it un- | fortunately happ2aed, a Methodist minister preached that day. Next morning Dr. Douglas left the place without baving shown himself ; to the confereace. The ministers on recover- ing from their surprise, went on with their work as though nothing had happened.”

The will of the late Sir Alex. Campbell, Lieut.-Governor of Ontario, disposes of an estate valued at $84,665, of which $13,079 is in cash, $20,716 in bank stocks, $18,562 in life insufance, $2,315 in mortgages, $2,000 in securities, $1,290 in book debts, $3,000 in household goods, $5,550 in real estate. The will is dated April 2, 1892. The entate is left mainly to his svn Charles and daughter Marjorie.

—The month of August next is expected to bring important if not wonderful and sensational developments in the study of our mysterious heavenly little kinsman. August 5th next Mars will arrive at a poiut directly opposite this earth, which it reaches but once in fifteen years, when the dis:ance between the two planets will be reduced from 141,000,000 to 36,000,900 miles. Upon that night a thousand tele- scopes will be levied at the planet, which will pose inrefulgent beauty in the southern skies, and a thousand eyes will seek to ierce the veil of distance that conceals the knowledge for which science thirsts. Wonderful results are expected by reason of the marvellous improvements that have ben made in astronomical instruments within fifteen years and since the last most favorable observation was made- With the powerfal lenses and the photographic appliances of to- day it will be as if the far away visitor, tempted by curiosity, had drawn nearer to the earth thanever. Although Mars will be 35,- 000,000 miles away, the powerful Lick tele- scope will magnify her to a size as if viewed at a distance of but 17,500 miles. Mars but 17,- 500 miles away. What wonder, thea, that astronomers are feverish with anxiety for August to come.

—A well-known and _ thought-to-be truthful resident of Bedford informed a Halitax Chronicle reporter a few days ago, that potato bugs were becoming very nu- merous in that locality, and that several of them were seen on the roadway looking at two oxen ploughing in a field near by, te see if potatoes were to be planted there.
