Tue closing entertainment of Miss Clara Louise Kellogg, at the Academy of Music, Halifax, on ‘Weducsing evening, was largely attended notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather. A CORRESPONDENT at Georgetown writing yesterday, May 19, informs us that the steamer Beaver has this season made two trips to the Magdalens—one last week and another this week. She returned on her second trip on Wednesday, and reports seein no ice until near Souris, which was full, an the steamer could not getin. The Captain thinks the only ice in the gulf at the present time is that in the vicinity of Souris. The steamer will leave Pictou for the Magdalens on Monday next.

Shaw, an Island student—and other matter of special interest to friends of the College. The liberality of George Munro, Esq., of New York to Dalhousie continues unabated. Arrival ot ‘the Carroll.

HER FIRST TRIP TO THIS PORT THIS SEASON, THe steamer Carroll, Capt. Brown, which was detained in the Strait of Canso by ice,

arrived at six o'clock this morning. The interior of the steamer has been nicely

painted up,her saloons newly carpeted, and she is in excellent condition forthe season’s service. There are nv changes to note in the personell of her officers. Captain Brown, Purser Nickerson, Steward Welsh, and the other favorites who make the journey between here and Boston so _plea- sant for travelers, are still to the front, and were warmly welcomed by their many friends at this port. It is, therefore, al- most unnecessary for us to say that pas- sengers and freight will still be handled in manner satisfactory to all concerned.

The Carroll brought a cargo of general merchandize and the following passengers : Aggie Sullivan, Miss T B Coffin, Bessie Coftin, Flora Walker, Annie Wade, Mrs Webster, Miss C Adeline, Isabel McInnis, Wm White, J Colt, W Hughes, Mr Webster, Chas Stewart.

She sails on return about midnight with a general cargo consisting principally of potatoes and eggs. We wish the Carroll and her officers a pleasant and prosperous season.

In the House this evening Col. King Harman, Parliamentary Under Secretary for Lreland, replying to Wm.A. Macdodald, Parnellite, in reterence to the remarkable increase in emigration from Ireland, said it should be attributed partly to the growing want of employment in Lreland, partly to the fear entertained by the masses that the new crimes act would enable the authori- ties to punish persons for past violations of law, and partly to the fact that numbers of the Lrish peple were forced to leave the country because of the disinclination to join secret societies.

Macdonald asked : ‘Isn't the increase of emigration from Ireland partly due to the introduction of the Crimes’ Bill and the desire of the Irish people to escape tyranny / (Cries of hear, hear.)

Speaker Peel called for order, saying | this isa matter of opinion and not a pro- per subject question.

Mr. Labouchere moved to adjourn the debate for the purpose of enabling him to criticise the annexation of Zululand.

Sir H. Holland said a full opportunity would be given to discuss that matter when the Zulu estimates are brought up for debate.

Several radicals supported Labouchere’s motion.

Mr. Smith moved carried, 278 to 156.

Labouchere’s motion was rejected, 280 to 142.
