The policy of England on this question, has been of a fair and open character ; jointly with France, she has procured from Mexico a recognition of the independence of Texas, and has in all probability averted a war, which would have been oftho most ssnguinary character. The two great powers met the United States in fair combat, with weapons of American choosing—fact and diplomacy—and the result is the signal deteat of " the great and growing Re- pttblic.” This is precisely as it should be. The United States had departed from its usual policy on this question, and all but openly avowed its desire of territorial aggrandisemcat. Threats and warlike demonstrations towards Mexico were to eﬂ'ect those results which have hitherto been left. to stratagem and in- trigue.
