The physical and the social quences of the system are deplorable, and the new factory act will not tend tc improve things much. From the wages point of view, the workers, as t class, gain nothing by it. The com- retition by women tends to keep wages aown. Among the weavers, although us the machinery is driven faster ana payment is made by the piece, more is earned to-day than formerly, the rate paid is virtually the same as it wus 40 years ago. In nearly every em proyment which does not suffer from ecompetition by women the rate of wages is from 50 to 70 per cent. higher now than It was then. It is only amonz the weavers that the rate of payment rules so low in Lancashire. In the spinning and other departments of the cctton industry the men have by their vuions more generally kept women cut, and as a rule the workers earn rearly double the wages of the weav- ers. Their homes, consequently, are more comfortable, and their women- folk more generally cultivate the do- mestic virtues. The cotton trade is cnly one illustration of many that n ight be cited to show the ill results ©: the abandonment by women of vhat has hitherto been deemed the s¢X’s natural functions in order to en- ter men’s sphere, of labor. Similar ef- fects will doubtless be observable else- where as man is dispossessed by his Competitors.—The Realm.

The all-conquering bicycle has !n- vaded Japan and is now a_ familiar sight in the land of the ’ricksha. The I-uropeans take to it kindly, and the little brown men and women are equal- ls enthusiastic.
The government has equipped many of its postmen with roadsters, especial- ly those who deliver mail in the sub- urbs in the country districts.
The Japanese people themselves still regard the wheel as a great curiosity, tut are beginning to both master and ranufacture it.
Some of the Japanese women, says an unkind writer, have adopted a queer bicycle costume that is a com- tination of the bloomers with the na- tive dress. It is neither Japanese nor European. Combined with the upper pert of the kimono costume the Jap- anese ladies clothe their nether limbs in what are neither knickerbockers, t:cusers, zouaves nor bloomers.
The ludicrous effect is heightened by the girl having a national habit ef turning the toes in developed to its largest extent. All that you see when she passes you is a pair of round and pretty heels wobbling In an uncertain manner and a little body coiled up that makes you think of a gay Mttle monkey on top of a pole.
To Prevent Tool Rust.
A good recipe for a preparation to keep tools from rusting is as foilows: Di: solve one-half ounce of camphor tr cne pound of melted lard, take off th scum, and mix in as much black lea¢ cr graphite as will give it an iron-gray celor. Smear the tools with this mix- ture, and after 24 hours, rub clean with a soft linen cloth.

GAS ENGINES FOR MINING SERVICE.
the Most Economical
Power Eeept Water.
They Represent
There can be no question as to the edvantages presented by the gas en- gine for mining work. In many places where mining operations are carried ou, fuel adapted for economical use in a steam boiler is scarce and costly. But the use of some of the different forms of gas producers permits us to employ any kind of fuel—coal of in- ferior quality, lignite, wood, sawmill refuse, sage brush and the like—which wculd give but a poor return in the boiler furnace. Moreover, the use of Water is required only for cooling the werking cylinders, and the quality of the supply is of"little moment. Mine

the quantity available is limited it can be economized by using it over and Over again.
The gas engine as now constructed is usually a compact machine, requir- ings less adjustment and less care in iis setting up and foundations than the average steam engine; points that msy be of moment in a rough mining country. Moreover, there is not the same marked difference in economy between large and small engines a» there is in a steam plant; and a small irstallation may be gradually enlarg- ed as required by the addition of small units at a time, and stil! be economical in practice. Where it is convenient to distribute power at various points, it is entirely practieable to use several smaller engines and supply them with &a: from a conveniently located pro ducer.
There are other considerations that might be brought forward in favor of the gas engine, but enough has been said to show that it has substantiai claims to favor. How much weight these have with practical men is prov- ed by the fact that several of the largest engine builders in the country eicher have already added some form of gas engine to their lists, or are ar- rarging to do so; appreciating, as they show by this action, the future im- pertance of the motor. The habit here has been rather to look on the gas ervgine as of use chiefly where small power is needed; but in Europe en- zines of 300 and 350 horsepower are in daily use, and larger ones are be- ing introduced. Mills of the largest size are run by these engines coupled, and in most cases with notable econ- omy in fuel consumption. There are nO more limitations as to size, in fact, than those of convenience of construc- tion and strength of materials, as in the steam engine, and they can be ecupled and thus furnish any desired power with individual engines of mod- erate size.—Engineering and Mining Journal.
PRACTIGAL USES OF OZONE.
Valuable For Artificially Aging Liquors and Seasoning Wood.
Ozone is now practically applied for several purposes. Experiments with it have shown that it will artifically age brandy, whiskey, sweet and hard wines and liquors. Ozone will also improve coffee’ by rendéring harmless ofly beans; the aroma of tobacco is also cunsiderably improved by the applica- tion of ozene. The latest application of it is for the rapid seasoning of wood for sound boards of musical instru- nunts, which for the purpose is left in a hermetically-closed, heated room from 12 te 24 hours, ozonified air be ing freely introduced into the room. [t Seems that this process will harden the wood, increase its resistance arainst the influence of temperature end moisture, and give it considerably more acoustic or resounding quality. Another recent application of ozoni- fied air is that of the thickening of linseed oil for the manufacture of lin- eleum, which, by the old process, took several months. By the liberal use of ozene linseed oil is now thickened to the required consistency within a few cays. Most remarkable, however, is the advantage of employing ozone fer tieaching linen, since the time empley- ed is less than one-third of the bleach- ing process by sunlight, not consider- ing that this latter is dependent both upon the season and the weather. The ozone process of bleaching renders the werk absolutely independent of outside influences. Ozone has also been found very valvable in chemical and tech- nieal processes, particularly in the pro- duction of pure derivatives of starch, fcr instance, soluble starch, dextrine, crystalgum, ete. Here the ozone is instrumental in taking away all the matter which causes the dark color, bad odor and taste.
Gas Made From Wood.
The town of Deseronto, Ontario, where there are several large lumber mills, is partially lighted by gas made fit m sawdust. The sawdust is charged in retorts which are heated by a wood fire, the gas from the retorts passing into a series of coils and thence into tie purifiers, which are similar to those used for coal gas. Lime is the prin- cipal purifying agent employed. When it passes out of the retorts the gas possesses an odor much less disagree- uble than that of ordinary lighting gas, and resembles somewhat that ot tie smoke from a fire of green wood or leaves. The. works in use are small, turning out daily 540 cubic metres of fas, for the production of which about two tons of sawdust are required, A man and boy furnish all the labor needed at the works. The gas in an ordinary burner gives an illumination ef about 18 candle-power. The best quality comes from resinous woods. A quantity of 100 kg. of sawdust leaves a residue of 20 kg. of charcoal.
