Tne steamer St, Lawrence arrived at Pictou yesterday evening. She sailed for this port at, 11 o’clock this forenoon, and arrived at 5, p. m. with several passengers. Princess of Wales sailed for Summerside and Shediac this morning at 9.30.

Tre evidence adduced in the case of the boy Lemuel Harris—who was arrested on the charge of stealing a purse from Mrs. McKinnon—was so conflicting that he was discharged by the Stipendiary Magistrate this morning.

We are pleased to see our friend Mr. Keith at work in Mr. C. Robertson’s cut- ting department. Mr. Robertson must do a flourishing trade in order to keep two first-class cutters at work. We wish him every success.

Mg. Donaty McEacaes arrived in this city yesterday morning per M. A. Starr. Mr. -McEachen has been absent from the Island for twenty-nine years. He is at present from Port Natal, South Africa, where he has res'ded for two years, and is now on a visit to his numerous friends on this Island, and present the guest of Mr. H. Wilson. He enjoys splendid health.

EARLY THIS MORNING a stabbing affray oc- enrred on board the barkentine Hrema, be- tween the mate--Louis McDonald, of Georgetown—-and « Russian named Isaac Hobblknas. The crew were preparing to discharge the cargo and the mate was in the hold showing the men their different posi- tious. Hobbleknas being unable to under- stamd Wrelish, the mate beckoned him to take a certain position which appeared not to be aceeptable to him. He did not take it, and—owing to a lack of the Russian language—the mate could not compel him by force of words. He accordingly put his hand on his shoulder and pushed him to- ward his place. The Russian was big and heavy,—-he did not arrive im his p?oper po- sition, and another push was necessary. On receiving the second he drew forth a large sheath knife and, holding it in his right hand, stood waiting for the third push. The mate, not wishing to be overruled by the presence of a kuife, attempted to kick the Russian, whereupon he caught him (the mate) by the heel of the boot and plunged the knife into his (the mate’s) right leg and ripped it toward the knee, leaving «a gash about five inches long and an inch and one half deep. The mate was taken to the cabin and a surgeon called to dress the wound. The Russian was given in charge of the police. His trial was postponed this forenoon on account of the mate’s inability to appear at the Court.

The Vienna Political Correspondence says: ‘* Negotiations between the Russian head- quarters and Admiral Hornsby for simul- taneous withdrawal, have remained at a complete stand-still for the last few days, and it is reported that General Todelben has brought fresh instructions, so that the resumption of these negotiations will pos- sibly be attempted.”

Gortschakoff will probably be prevented from resuming his duties for sometime. The idea has been revived in the summon- ing of Count Shoubaloff to discharge Prince Gortschakoff’s functions, ad irterim.

The Times’ leading editorial says, con- cerning this: ‘ Russia appears to be ready to make numerous concessions, provided she can substitute for common European interests in Turkey a, set of isolated and conflicting interests, and can thus emanci- pate herself no loss the turkey from direct obligations.towards Bugope. It is this dis- position against’ which Wwe ‘must persistently protest; and if Russia really seeks a peace- ful issue to the present complications, she must recognize the principles she has ac knowledged on former occasions. Let her only do that, and concessions even less than she offers might in some respects satisfy this countyy, The point at issue now is, whether Russia will recognize that the rights of the Great Powers as established by the treaties of 1856 and 1871l,take precedence ‘of the claims of the claims of the treaty of San Stefano.

A dispatch from Constantinople states that Mr. Maynard, United States Minister, went to Volo on Monday, in an American man-of-war, to inquire into certain alleged massacres by Bozhbuzouso.

The Grand Duke Nicholas presented Gen- eral Todleben to the Sultan on Tuesday, and then left on board the Imperial yacht Tivedia for Odessa.

Edmund O'Flynn, of Madoc, has been nominated by the Liberals to oppose Mac- kenzie Bowell in North Hastings, Ont.

The Premier will speak at Mill Brook after the session closes.

The Dominion imports for March were $6.250,000, and the exports $1,750,000. Baruvrst, April 27.

A young man, about twenty years of age, named John Curtis, belonging to Dunlap settlement, was killed at Mill Stream yes- terday while assisting to break a landing of logs. Some hundreds of the logs passed over his body, carrying him forward into the river, and killing him instantly.

It is reported here also, that a man named Deague was killed at Bellequene,two days ago in somewhat the same manner,but particulars are wanting.

Ninety Assemblymen of the New York State Legislature arrived here last might from Albany on a visit. They return home on Monday morning.

Apprehensions are entertained of party disturbances to-morrow evening, on the occasion of Hacket Grange Lodge giving a public entertainment.

A Cobourg, Ont., despatch of the 25th inst. says: ‘‘A fire broke out this morning in the new brick building known as the Windsor Hotel. The fire had got sucha headway before it was discovered that it was found impossible to save the building. The firemen worked away until 5 o'clock, | and one engine had gone home ; but the steam fire engine was still working when the front wall fell outwards and buried five or six firemen in the ruins. Three of them were killed instantly and one is now lying upon the point of death. The names of. those killed are Charles Patterson, James Forrest and George Stevenson. The latter’ leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss. Several other firemen were in- jured more or less seriously. The building was anew three story one. The upper stories and half of the lower comprised the Windsor Hotel. The fire was undoubt- edly the work of an incendiary, the hotel hayi The Mayor quest. }
