At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court, this forenoon, John Clerkin, drunk and in- capable, was fined $2 and costs, or 8 days ; Michael McAdam, for the same offense, was fined the same. The assault case of George Thompson vs. Donald McLeod, was dis- missed, plaintiff failing to prove the assault.

:Tne Marine ex-Member for Belfast came to.grief at the Pownal Meeting on Saturday night. After he got off a number of his political jokes, a most influential elector of Belfast, ina loud voice exclaimed, ‘* You have betrayed all our trusts, and you may now go down with the party which you es- pouse.”’

Tue Patriot is very flat. The St. John Sun explains how it is. It says: ‘ The subsidized press already hears the whistling of the wind, the forerunner of the storm which will presently burst upon it. Noth- ing is so mighty as popular indignation, which once aroused will move on with giant strides until a subsidized press acknowledg- es its guilt or ceases to exist.”

Mr. Welsh, the American Minister, writes, under date of August 8th, remind- ing Lord Salisbury that the former appeals for the release of the Fenian, Condon, have been refused, but since then the action of the British Government has brought it so much honor that he (Welsh) thought the moment might possibly be a_par- ticularly agreeable one for the ex- ercise of clemency, especially in answer to the prayer of a friend.y go ernment which has shown so deep an in crest in the case as io have already preferred the prayers three imes, and would ¢ subtless continue to do so, but w') always most respectfully await untli it is granted. ‘Che belief in the United States is that Condon isan ardent Irishman who served most honorably in the American war, was a vic- tim of Feireumstaneces in his wrong doing, and having been eleven years in prison and learned wisdom, may well be restored to his family in the United States.
