Andrew Carnegie Tells How the O!d Time Prejudice Has Been Overcome.

If a young man does not find romance in his business, itis not the fault of the business, but the fault of the young man. Business is not all dollars. These are but the shell. The kernel lies within and is to be enjoyed later as the higher faculties of the business man so constantly called into play develop and mature.

The old prejudice against trade has gone even from the strongholds in Europe. This change has come because trade itself has changed. In old days every branch of Dusiness was conducted upon the snaallest retail scale, and small dealings in small afiairs breed

small men. Besides every man had to be occupied with the details, and indeed each man manufactured or

traded for himself. Vhe higher qualities of organization and of enterprise, of broad views and of executive ability, were not brought into play. In our day business in all branches is conducted upon so gigantic a scale that partners of a huge concern are rulers over a domain. The large employer cf labor sometimes has more men in his industrial army petty German kings had under their banners.

I can with confidence recommend the business careeras onein which there is abundant room for the exercise of man’s highest powers and of every good quality in human nature. I believe the career of the great merchant or banker or captain of industry to be favorable to the develop- ment of the powers of the mind and to the ripening of the judgment upon a wide range of general subjects, to freedom from prejudice and the keeping of an open mind. And I do know that permanent success is not cbtainable except by fair and honor- able dealing, by irreproachable habits and correct living, by the display of good sense and rare judgment in all the relations of huinan life, for credit and confidence fly from the business man foolish in word and deed, or irregular in habits, or even sus- pected of sharp practice. When the Irish Ate Shamrocks.

That the shamrock was used as diet be- fore it was adopted as the national emblem is conclfsively demonstrated, though Mr. Colgan shows that one writer borrews from anether. Very few drew their in- formatien from personal observation. Spenser wndoubtedly did, and he is per- haps responsible for the familiarization of this fact to his contemporaries. I quote the passage from ‘‘The View of the Pres- ent State of Ireland:’’

They Happen Sometimes Because Men Aro Unable to Realize Danger.

A good many years ago I was sonducter of a freight train, and one night we ran to a meeting point on the maiu line, with orders to await a train which was running in. The latter was a bit late, god my train was resting quietly on the tnain line, it having the right of way. The in freight, by the common laws of rail- roading and accerding to orders, should have heaved-in sight, as the sailors say, and then slowed down and gene on to the siding, so that my train could proceed on its way up the road.

“Twas seated in the cabof the engine when the headlight of No. —— flashed in sight some two miles off. It grew in size, and the train came on without any appar- ent reduction in its speed. I thought it was coming toc near and said so to the engineer. No. —-— kept up its lick, and I suddenly rerlized that if it did not stop, and that quickly, there would be trouble. AsIthought of this Linvoluntarily grasped the reversing lever and threw it back. Vhe other train came dashing along, and then I saw that if we romained where we were my train would get hurt, so I pulled the throttle end the train began buinping backward, but not fast enough to escape, aud calling to the engineer and Sreman £ reversed the lever again to check ber Lack motion and leaped for the ground. While 1 jumped, the trains came together, and there was a vast desl of damage done to the front end of the locomotives. When the fuss was over, I climbed into the cab of the other engine and found it empty. Tearing that the men might be hurt, I grasped a lantern and started out to hunt them up. I had not gone more than 59 feet when I came across a figure lying alongside of the ties. I6 was the engineer. ‘Are you hurt?’ I asked, and he replied in asieepy voice that he was not. He had tumbled out of his cab. Well, to makea long story short, it turned out that both engineer and fireman had been tired ont, had gone to sleep, fergot all about orders and meeting points and were asleep to within a minute er two before the crash took place, and then, sleepily realizing what was going to happen, had rolled from their seats and alighted on the soft earth of the embankment.’’—New Orleans Times-Democrat.
