Wasuincrox, August 18.—Farther light onthe sutject of the entry into Pekin has been furnished by the acting Secretary of State who has made pablic « telegram received last evening from the United States Conenl at Chefoo. The text of this telegram reads as follows: “Carroo, August 17.—The Japauese admiral rejorte that the allies attacked Pekin to the east of the city on the 15th, and their attack was met with ao obstin- ate resistance on the part of the Chinese. In the evening the Japanese entered the capital with the forces of ths other powers, when the foreign legations were surrcunded. The inmates are safe. The Japanese lost one hundred; the Chinese loss was three bundred.

Toxio, August 19, —Extracts from a long despatch describing the advance cf the allied forces from Tien Tain say that General Ma disappeared during the fight- ing at Yang Tsun and an immediate ad- vance on Pekin wasdecided upon ata council of war in which 385 officers took part held at Yang Tsun on August 7th, and that the advaaoce columns were drawn up in the following order: Japanese, Rus. sian, British and American. The French contingent wae obliged to remain at Yang Teun on account of its inadequate eom- n.isearist.

Mr. Arsenault Chosen President fot P, E. Island

ARicHAT, Oe Aug. 16. — This morning COmmittses of the Acadian con- vention met in a general session to hear the resolutions prepared the preceding night. Amongatthese reeolutions some touched on educational matters, others the press, and some were of religious interes: besring on ecclesiastical government. Speeches were made by Senator Poirier, Judge Landry, Rev. Mr. Belliveau, of Grand Digue, and others. The greatest enthusiasm reigned when, io the absence of Hoo. A. H. Comeau, Professor Jules M. Lanos, of Halifax, moved, seconded by His Honor Judge Landry,tbat the following telegram be sent to Her Majesty Queen Vicgoria :

“That we the French Acadians, assem - bled in general convention at Arichat, Cape Breton, protest our unfaliering loyalty tothe British crown, and as ae token of ourlove for Her Majesty offer her our condolence on the recent death of His Royal Highness the Prince ot Saxe- Cobourg.”

All heard this resolution standing and ‘areheaded, singing “ God Save the Queen.”

Then the resolution was paseed by the raising of the hand to Heaven.

Caraquet wae selected as the meeting place for the next convention.

A president and several vice presidents

were appointed. Hon. Senator Poirier was asked to fill the president’s chair. Hon.M Comeau ie the first president of Nova Scotia; Hon Isadcre LeBlanc for Cape Breton; Mr.Arsenault for P. E [eland; Dr. Delaney for the Magdalen Islands, and O.M. Melanson for New Brunswick. Dr. Belliveau, ot New Brunswick, is secretary, and Judge Landry, treasurer. Sir Wilfrid Laurer and Lady Laurier, with a large company of the Premier’s Parliamentary supporters, left Arichat this morning onthe Government cruiser Constance, for a trip through the Bras d Or Lakes to Sydney.
