Tue Riot ar Sawyervitez — In explain- ation of the news of riot at Sawyerville, Quebec, the following statement is made :— “The contractors engaged in building the Hereford Railway, who left the country, had 700 Italian laborers, who have not been paid any wages ince August 1. These laborers congregated together uear Sawyerville, and several riots with laborers engaged by the railway company, occured. As more serious trouble was anticipated the militia were call- ed out to quell the disturbance.”

SLwenty-stx Wives.—The youthful Emper- or of China has evidently not been impressed by Mrs. Mona Caird’s article on ‘‘1ls Mar. riage a Failure?’ He considers that marriage ig a success, and, in fact, that he cannot have too much of it. According to a Shanghai paper, on the 9th of July there were selected for him twenty-six wives, of whom half a dozen came from Mandarin families. There were no fewer than 136 candidates for a posi- tion in the Emperor’s harem, but one hundred and ten were rejected as unsuitable.

Exareitrion Nores.—The live stock en- tries, which closed last night, show a very large increase over preceeding years.

The Gaslight Company as well as the Electric Light Company are notified to sup- ply all the lights they can possibly place on the grounds and building.

Representatives of the press are invited to visit the exhibition building during the aiternoon and evening of Tuesday next, as well as on the two following days.

The building (Drill Shed) is now ready for the receipt of exhibits, which will be received there on Monday next, when the Secretaries office will be in the building with Telephone attached. Exhibits in the fine arts, woollen gvods, manufactured articles, &c., will be received on Monday, in order to be able to_attend the Roots, Vegetables, Fruit, &c., on Tuesday up to 2 p. m., when the doors will be closed for the Judges tou commence inspection.

A telegram from Ottawa stating that the Dominion Government had received advices from the Australian Governments urging negotiations for closer trade relations be- tween Australia and Canada is arousing comment in Great Britain. The Daily Chronicle voices the general sentiment in an editorial wherein it rejvices at the movement as distinctly tending to imperial unity, and says if both the colonies wish to enter into such negotiations it is quite safe to assume that the Imperial Government will gladly give the required assistance. The Australian invitation is opportune, seeing the possibility of relation by the United States. It hopes the various parts of the Empire will ultimately recognize the wisdom of forming themselves into a sort of Zoilverein Empire, which could afford to adoptthe American free trade policy between the varivus States, and protection in dealings with other countries.

The Postmaster-General is taking mea- sures fo secure money order postal facili- ties with Japan.

The Synods of the two branches of the Reformed Episcopal Church in Canada met to-day at Ottawa, and consummated a re- union ofthat church. Several delegates trom the Maritime Province are present.

The Civil Service examinations wil! be held at Charlottetown, Halifax and St. John on Nov. 13. Applications will be received until Oct. 15th, and must be filed before Oct. 26th,

Notice is given that forms of application for the next examination for the Civil Ser- vice of India are available at the office of the Secretary of State here.

The Chignecto Marine Railway Com- pany announce a meeting Oct. 29th to ratify the issue of a million and a half of cumulative preferred stocks.

Yellow Fever. JACKSONVILLE, Sept. 28.

There is a marked reduction in the num- ber of cases and deaths to-day, which seems to justify the hope that the worst of the epidemic is over. Eighty-five cases were reported and 5 deaths. Among the honor- ed dead is Dr. L. F. Eddy. of Louis- ville, who died at the Medica) Bureau this afternoon. He was one of the volunteer physicians who came here to give his services free of charge. There were three new cases at McLenny to-day and one death. There were no new cases Or suspeets at Gainsville to-day. There are no reports from Fernandi.

A Great Failure. New York, Sept. 28. Williams, Black & Co., general brokers members of the Produce, Cotton & Coffee Exchanges, supposed to be one of the strongest houses in the city, were posted on the Produce Exchange ten minutes be- fore the closing hour to-day as unable to meet their engagements. The news caused the greatest surprise but came too late to affect the markets. The firm say they ex- pect to settle in full to-morrow. Disinter- ested parties say the liaDilities will reach up in the millions. The firm, dealing largely in wheat, where probably caught in the Chicago squeeze.

New Telegraph Line.

VaALPaRaiso, Sept. 28.

The Transandjne Telegraph Co. will open to the public its new direct telegraph line between Valparaiso and Buenos Ayres on Oct. Ist. This is the iron pole line in con- nexion with 40 miles of cable laid under the perpetual snows of the Andes, and will eusure communication between Buenos Ayres and London via Galveston inside an hour and a half.

The election in Albert County to-day, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Dr. Levis, resulted in a victory fur Mr. Emmerson by 225 majority. Emmerson led in all the parishes but one. Duffy dropped oyt of the contest yesterday.

Sad Death. Siucok, Ont., Sept. 28. Near Walingham Centre, Edward Cham- ber accidentally stepped into the cylinder of a threshing machine, and one of his legs was made mince meat of. He died about tour hours later from loss of blood,

Two Men Drowned. Hairax, N. S., Sept. 28. Word has been received of the drowning, at Cape Race, of the Second Mate, Robert McKenzie, and seaman Turner, of the Gov- ernment steamer Newfield, through the up- setting of a boat loaded with coal.

Hanlan Beaten Again. Sypngy, N. 8. W., Sept. 28. In the boat race yesterday between Kemp and Hanlan for $2,500 and the champion- ship, Kemp won by ten lengths.

Hon. J. H. Fletcher has been nominated at a Republican Convention as a Representative for Dakota. He is the leading man on the ticket, and will probably be elected.

Rev. Mr. Keefer, the great temperance lec- turer of Canada, will deliver a lecture in Char- Jottetown on the evening of Tuesday, the 9th of October. Subject, ‘‘The Repeal of the Scott Act.”
