CAR THEFT - A comparative- ly new twist was used by a car theif late Monday. A motorist was hailed by a pedestrian, who told the driver that his car was stal- led near the Charlottetown Hospit- al. Would he drive down to help start the vehicle. The motorist pro- ceeded to the area with his new found passenger who picked out the car which he said could not be started. He then requested the driver to try starting the car. which he did apparently with little trouble. The passenger than thank- ed the man. climbed in the car and drove away. Shortly after. the owner of the car Mr. Hugh Train- or reported to the City Police that his car had been stolen. Mr. Train- or later recovered the missing veh- icle parked outside the ruined Prince Edward Theatre.

Conservative Ass'n. Meets

The P.E. Island Conservative Association met Monday evening in regular meeting at the Char- lottetown Y.M.C.A. Past Pres. Reagh Bagnall of Hunter River presided. After routine business was completed the meeting spent considerable time discussing pro- blems of the day. Important among items of discussion were freight rates as applied to P.E.l. farm and fisheries marketing problems and labour interests.

The next regular meeting will be held the first Wednesday of May.

Cr. Negligence Case Continues

The case of Donald Edward Mac- Pherson, charged with criminal negligence whilst operating a mot- or vchicle and being involved in an accident, was resumed yester- day morning before Magistrate K. M. Martin. After the evidence of two more witnesses was heard the case was further adjourned until Thursday, April 12. at nine o'clock. The two heard were Detective Sgt. Anthony Lund of the City Police I)epariment, who described the scene of the accident; which took place at the intersection of Prince and Grafton Streets on the evening of February 16. The sec- ond witness, l).1na MacGrath, mec- home, an employee of S. R. John- ston Ltd, told of his examination of the car the following day.

As a result of the evidence heard the Magistrate instructed the Chief of Police to charge George Shep- Iiard. Jr., owner of the vehicle. under section 23 of the Highway Traffic Act (faulty equipment).

The Kinsmen, with traditional ef- ficiency. once again staged their Annual ”Varieties" which opened Tuesday night in the Auditorium of Prince of Wales College in a man- ner that challenges competition and rates their ability to bring a balanced program to the footlighis as ”tops".

Produced and staged by Ivan Doberty and Ambie Wcatherhie, with a chorus of 50 mixed voices directed by Ken MacKenzie and 50719! by Loman MarAulay. the happy choice of this Big Four com- bination of experienced showmen. was in evidence throughout the en- tire presentation.

Under the distinguished patron- age of His Honour Lieutenant Gov- ernor Prowse and Mrs. Prowse, Premier the Hon. A. W. Mathcson and Mrs. Matbeson and Ills Wor- ship Mayor J. Kay Gallant as a diversion from the male voices sang "Sunny Side of The Street" and Ambie Weather- hie complei d the solo routine with ”Whcn I get You Alone Tonight". The Scene concluded with the Four Tons of Harmony In a Medley of popular numbers.

lAlexandra Calf Club Changes Name

The third meeting of the Alex- andra -I-H Calf Club was held at 'Alex.andra School on April 9. The president Donnie Judson occupied the choir and the meeting came to order by members repeating the 4-H club pledge in unison.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved as cor. ected. It was moved and seconded that the name of the club he changed from Alexandra Holstein Call Club to Alexandra and Dist- rict 4-ll Calf Club.

The report from the Crokinolo party held on April 5 showed g porflt of reasonable prnpnrllong, A debate. "resolved that dairy calves are more profitable to 4-H club members than beef steers" followed the business session. in which the affirmative were given the decision. Court Of Inquiry Begins Probe In Marines Deaths

PARRIS ISLAND. lS.C. (AP)-A Marine Corps court of inquiry hoard testimony Tuesday from sur- vivors of a forced night march into a treacherous tidal stream. ordered "to teac the platoon dis- clpline."

Five of the 75 recruits who were led into the river Sunday by Sgt. Matthew C. McKeon of Worcester. Mass, were drowned. Another is missing and piesumed dead.

McKeon, 31, will be in custody until the court completes its work at this recruit depot basic training centre for all marines inducted east of the Mississippi.

Before the court convened. Mc- Keon issued a statement through his counsel saying that he led the men on the ill-fated march to teach them discipline. "I can't find words to express my grief. he added. McKeon would not talk directly with reporters.

PRAISED FOR HEROISM

Several of the survivors praised McKeon for heroism in pulling men from the icy waters of the stream in pitch darkness. McKeon said he was the first into water, and the last out.

The stream winds near the Par- ris Island rifle range. Its size var- ies with the tides. In places it. is 100 yards or more wide. The bed is soft and mucky. and dense vegeta- tion borders it.
