The Puritan and Ganesta. HOW THE FOUL OCCURRED.

When the yachts came in view from Sandy Hook on Tuesday morning, the Genesta and Puritan were in close com- pany and making sail for Scotland Light- ship. The red, white and blue pennant of the Puritan was first seen. The yachts were less than fifty yards apart when cff the Highlands. At 11.20 the skipper of the Genesta pointed right toward the Puritan in an endeavor to take the latter’s wind away. The captain of the Puritan believed he could cross the Genesta’s bow and trid to do so. The result was a foul in which the Genesta’s bowsprit was carried away and the mainsail of the Puritan badly torn. The consternation on the judges’ boat and on the yachts was great, and those not near enough to see were afraid that the yachts were injured below the water line. It was a foul pure and simple upon the part of the Puritan and was due to the fact that her skipper thought he could bring her before the wind faster than he dic. The hole in the Puritan’s mainsail is in the leech in the lower corner, and of course renders her useless. It was only by luck that further accident were averted, for after the collision all the visiting and atten- dant yachts ran up close to the Puritan and Genesta, and several fouls occurred. The judges held a consultation after the fouling vccurred, and talked to the skippers of the Puritan avd Genesta. Both declired racing an impossibility, and the judges then at 12 o'clock cfiicially declared the race off.

As far as can be learned the Puritan was at fault in fowling, but it might have been avoided by the Genesta if she had acted differently. Both yachts had noticed the preparatory signal of the judges’ boat and were close together. he Genesta was near the lizhtship and the Puritan close astern of her. The Genesta tacked,but the

howsprit was broken off close to the stem and ‘took with it the jib, leaviug only the fore- _topsail standing. The hole in the Puritan’s sail is not very large and could easily have been repaired, but the Genesta set a signal | protesting against the race, and as they had / not yet been started her protest was noted rnd the yachts towed back to NewYork. It | Wasa pity, as there was just wind enongh to make a splendid race. The damage to the Genesta will take some time to repair and probably the Puritan may have suffer- ed some damage which was not observed.
