Gold is peuring into Europe from the United States ata tremendous rate. London Telegraph of April 26th said:—‘‘It is possible that the plethora of money so much complained of may be partially relieved by the introduction of the Russian and Portuguese loans next week; but against that influence must be set further large arrivala of gold. The Scythia has arrived from New York with £53,090 in gold; and the City of Rome with £389,000, and the Britannic with £186,200, are row about due from that port. The Washington hag reached St. Nazaire from Central America with £27,156 in gold, chiefly for London— a much smaller remittance than for some time past. The Oregon left New York to- day with £300,00), and the City of Chester with £50,000 in specie. The total ship- ments from New York to Europe last week have amounted to £1,086,000 in gold, and £48,000 in silver.” The same paper said on the 28th :—‘‘Only a small amount of gold was sent to the Bank of England, £50,000 which arrived from America being bought for the Continent. A large total, however—nearly £680000—from New York and Central America, is now awaiting disposal. Some of this will be taken for Holland and Germany, in connection apparently with the issue of the Russian loan, subscriptions for which will be re- ceived to-morrow; but after all deducsions a considerable balance will, no doubt, find its way to the bank. About £1,5000,000 is known to be still en route from New York, two-thirds of which is for England and the remainder for the Continent.” mete eg
