‘‘The Government of the Dominion have bound themselves to spend over nine millions of dollars in building a piece of railroad among tlie mountains of British Columbia. Prince Eiward Islanders, whether they like it or not, must pay their share of this immense sum of money. It is well for them to ask themselves what they will ever get in return for the money thus expended in a country on the other side of the continent, thousands of miles from their doors. It will certainly be a fine thing for the 15,000 white people of Bri- tish Columbia to have nine millions spent among them. But how about Prince Edward Islanders, whose burden must be increased for their benefit.”

We copy the above from the Patriot. We submit that the Patriot is rather late in drawing attention to the expenditure on account of the Pacific Railway. The propor time for him to have protested against the building of that road was in 1874, when his friends were in power. In that year the Government of Alexander McKenzie passed a Pacific Railway Bill binding the country

to build a railway from the Atlantic to the

Pacific in sixteen years. For this Bill the six Grit members from P. E. Island voted. In addition to that, they also passed a Dili in the Commons providing for a railway across Vancouver's Island. This bill was supported by the Grit members from P. E. Island. It is true the Vancouver Island Bill was defeated in the Senate. But so eager was McKenzie aud his Grit friends to build the road, that they asked the British Government to allow them to am- mend the Act of Confederation and enable them to increase the number of senators so that they could force the road across Van- couver Island. The late Government spent somewhere about fifteen million dollars on the Pacific Railway, a great portion of which money was spent in surveying and locating the line. As early as 1875 they sent thousands of tons of steel rails to Brit- ish Columbia. In 1878 they called for ten- ders for the very piece of road that has been let for the wine millions. During all these years the Patriot was silent. Why did he not protest four years ago against the folly of buying steel rails at fifty-four dollars 2 ton te send them to British Col- umbia? Moreover he was at Ottawa re- porting the speeches of Grit members from Prince Mdward Island; and we do not see that they spoke or voted against such ex- travagancies. The late Government first bound the country to build the road as 2 Government work, and spent millions of dollars on it ; and the present Govern- ment are bound to follow it up. If the Conservativo party had not unfortunately been defeated in 1874, the Pacific Rail-

way would now be nearly completed by a}

T.e Merchants’ Memorial.

Boru the good policy and the good taste of publishing the merchants’ memorial to the Minister of Customs before it was pre- sented ave very doubtful—the more so as it was sent for publication only to the Opposi- tion press. Nor does it seem exceedingly sensible to croak about a grievance a fort- night after it has been removed, or to ask for the abatement of grievances after an oflicer had arrived from Ottawa specially charged with the duty of removing all legitimate grievances in connection with Custsm House at this port !

We did not intend to have alluded to this matter: and we should not have done so, had not some of the merchants concerrei expressed te us their regret that the memorial was published at the time and in the way it was, and their desire that an expression of their feeling should obtain publicity. We should be the first and the most hearty to protest against any unfairness on the part of customs officials to the sport. Such grievances as the appraisement nuisance could not be too vigorously opposed. That Conundrum.

Tur Patriot asks what Sir John Me- Donald has done to deserve the honor of such a banquet as that given him at Ottawa. One reason why the people honor Sir John is that he was the chief instrument in crushing out the Organized Hypocrisy that breoded like a vampire over the country for five years. For five long years the people were in the grasp of an octopus that sucked their life-blood, crushed their energies, and blasted their hopes. Isitany wonder that the people should feel gratified for deliverance from such amincubus. The editor of the Patriot will probably never understand the people’s feeling towards Sir John—unless, indeed, he be caught in the embrace of a devil fish and some good Samartian goes to

his rescue.

The N. P. in New Brunswick.

The Patriot has caught some of the spirit of the St. John Telegraph, for it says :—

‘‘Times are very hard in St. John, N. B. The National Policy is killing the trade of that enterprising city.”

The Premier of Now Brunswick—proba- bly as high an authority as the Patriot, said recently :—

‘‘ He would not say what was true if he did not say that there was a great awaken- ing in New Brunswick through the Na- tional Policy. (Cheers.) There had been a great depression, and the great fire at St. John had almost entirely destroyed the commercial centre of the Province ; but he was happy to be able te say that with the encouragement which was now being given to manufacturers prosperity was returning.

POTATOES To the Editor of the Examiner. Sir:—In your issue of yesterday is an extract from the St. John Telegraph quoting the price of potatces in England at 7 shillings per 100 lbs., or 7 cents per lb. The Velegraph is slightly astray in its calculation, as the price quoted above is only equal to barely 17 cents per lb.—quite a difference, and a price which, after deducting freight, box- ing, commissions, &c., will not leave ship- pers a very large margin of profit. GRAIN IN ENGLAND.

A leading Liverpool grain circular says: —*The grain trade was generally steady. Prices at the county markots were well maintained, and in some instances rather exceeded last week’s, though with little or uo improvement in the demand. Cargoes at ports of call were more firmly held, which checks business. Only twenty car- goes, however, remain undisposed of. A fair number were sold or withdrawn. Car- goes on passage were quiet. A smaller quantity of corn was offering, and prices advanced $d.”

TEA SUPPLIES.

According to telegraphic advices received from Hong Kong the total exports of tea from Shanghai and Hankow up to the 8th inst., had amounted to 63,000,000 lbs., against 67,000,000 fat the same time last year ; from Foochow the exports up to the samme date were 54,000,000 lbs. , against 60, - 000,000 Ibs., and from Canton, &c., 17,000, - 000 Ibs., against 17,000,000 lbs., bringing the total export since the opening of the season up to 134,000,000 Ibs., as compared with 144,000,000 lbs., a reduction of 10,- 900,000 lbs.

SUGAR.

Ata meeting of the sugar refiners at Greenock on Friday, it was resolved to re- duce the output by 2,000 tons a week for the next three weeks in conjunction with the London, Liverpool and Bristol refiners. AN INTERESTING ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE

MARITIME PROVINCES.

Says the Ottawa Citizen: ‘‘Sir John Mce- Donald’s announcement that in a few days he hopes to be able to tell of new and more favorable relations with Brazil and with France and Spain, is one that will be received with great interest by the coun- try at large. It is an especially interest- ing sabject with the people of the Eastern Provinces, because their shipping interests are so great, and because they will be the chief factors in the new traffic; but as the West is the great producing region, the news is also most interesting in this quar- ter. It marks the fulfilment of another promise by the Government, and the ad- vance in its proper direction of one of the most important elements of the National Policy.”
