MY GENTLE SISTER. KATE. 3' “RI. IOPHIA "- OLIVER Oh ! thou art very sweet, Kate ! Thine eyes are very blue, flow liketbe violet‘s silken cheek, When bathed in diamond dew 0r like the amethystine hues That paint the summer sky,

While o'er thy pure and rose-hued cheek,

Hope's sweet emotions fly ;

And soft beneath thy fringed lids. With joyous life elato,

Thy merry soul sheds summer round. My gentle sister Kate !

But though thy lofty brow is fair, Thy fortn of Grecian mould,

And though thy auburn tresses fall In many a graceful fold ;

And though around thy classic mouth The sportive graces lie,

And paint upon their rosy couch, The feelings as they fly ;

Yet not for these, Oh ! not for these Doth thy sweet form create

Within my heart such tenderness, My gentle sister Kate !

Oh, no ! ’tis tor the feelings warm Within thy heart enshrined,

Thy artlessness—thy tenderness— 'l‘he graces of thy mind ;

And for the sunny smile that plays Along thy lovely face,

“Where our sweet mother’s image fair Methinks I faintly trace.

And for sweet visions of the past, With young joy animate,

“heathen wert home’s bright pleiade, My gentle sister Kate !

I mind me of the bright-eyed hours When thou a lovely child,

Poured forth thy bird-like melody “ In native wood-notes wild : ”

Thou wcrt a joyous fairy then, All witchery and mirth,

The youngest ofthe kindred band, Around the household hearth. How he whose silvery locks lie low,

Ah! then with life clate, Caught every lisping Word of thine, My gentle sister Kate !

Oh ! olt o‘er Heaven’s blue summer sea, The moon hath sailed along,

And oft the sleeping flowers have bloom’d At spring’s reviving sun ;

And olt that moon hath looked on hopes Crushed in their virgin bloom

Those flowers have wept their incense tears

O'er many a loved one’s tomb. But ah ! for the bark of Time Hath brought a princely freight, Young hope. antljoy,und girlhood’s prime His generous gift, sweet Kate !

Oh ! thou, our youngest, fairest flower, The lambkin of the fold, Sweet bird ! whose soft melodious song, Along ourhearts hath rolled ; Summer an dlight are in my soul When I recall thy face, 80 full ofsunny radiance, Ofwitchery and grace, Oh ! still may smoothly glide thy bark

Were a man not to marrya second time, it might be concluded that his first wife had given him a disgust to marriage , but taking a second wife,he pays the highest compliment to the first —shotvingthatsbe tnade hint so happy asa married man, that he wishes to he so a second time !

A certain old lady in Lancaster, when- ever she hires a servant , ask him it he can whistle. On being requestion, to explain the cause of such a singular question, she replied, that when her ser— vant went down to draw ale, she always made hitn whistle until he returned, by which means she ensured his sobriety.— Court Gaz.
