majority of forty-five.

Yesterday's fight was a tremendous but the Grits were ignominiously beaten. The Government of Sir John A. Maedonald has been sustained with a good working majority of between thirty and forty.

Halifax succeeded in overcoming the |

twelve hundred repeal majority of last June, and elected Kenny at the head of the poll, with a keen race for second place between Jones and Stairs—probably favor ing the latter. In Nova Scotia the Government also re- Annapolis, Digby and probably Queen’s ; but lost Kings, Richmond, Yar- mouth and Lunenburg. They also held their own in the other counties, and had a majority of 700 in Cumberland ; of 600 in Colchester; of 590 in Pictou and 500 in Inverness.

In New Brunswick the Government lost St. John, but gained Charlotte, Sunbury, and probably Queen’s.

Hon. Peter Mitchell has elected.

There is universal regret island’s political suicide.

The race and revenge cry has materially reduced the majority in Quebec. Some splendid victories were, however, won by the Government, they carrying all the great centres of intelligence and the cities. Ottawa gives the Government a majority of 800 and Montreal a majority of 1,000.

There were also big Government ma- jorities in Toronto, Pamiltom, and other places; and Kingston has been redeemed.

Anglin has been badly beaten.

Blake, Mills and MacKenzie only got in by the skin of their teeth.

Every cabinet minister and Conservative has been re-elected.

Halifax Grits are terribly disgusted, They have lost many thousands of dollars. Repe il is as dead as Julius Cvesar.

The Bicy ele in War. ITS ADVANTAGES OVER THE HORSE-—BICYCLE CORPS IN THE FRENCH ARMY.

Now that the balloon has received a de- finite status in the British army, it is not unlikely the War Office will turn its atten- tion to the claims of the bicyele. Regular organized bicycle corps are attached to the French army, and in recent manceuyres have done all such work as_ the carrying of orders and despatches, and done it with more speed and punctuality than mounted troopers. In some cases bicyclists: have ac- complished journeys of 50 and 60 miles a day for six or eight days in succession. At this rate a bicyclist is not only more éiii- cient than a horsemn, but cheaper; fors-a bicycle costs originally less than. half the

cost of a cavalry horse, wears as long, is far less expensive to keep, and is much less likely to be put hors de combat by a stray bullet.
