Dr. Wait, Coroner, held an inquest in view of the body of Neil Burns, found dead on the road at Newton, yesterday morning. The jury on hearing evidence returned the following verdict : *‘that the decased came to his death by falling from and being run over by his wagon, while under the influence of intoxicating liquors.

Hostile Annamites are now entrenched 25 miles from Hanoi, and are wel! armed and confident. It is believed the French will make an attack as soon as they re- ceive reinforcements, which are expected daily.
Intelligence from Sierra Leone states that recent British operations against Chief Gbpowe were attended with great atrocities on the part of the native allies, who butchered and mutilated a‘l the males taken prisoners. These allies lect over 100 men killed during the attack upon the main fort, which was captured. Eighty-two of the enemy were killed by a single sheli.
The steamship ‘‘Rhiwindda,” Captain Gyles, from New York for Miramichi in ballast, struck on Tor Bay ledges, about two miles off Berry Head, Newfoundland, on Monday morning during thick fog. The crew were saved. The ship is in a bad position, and will probably be a total loss. From the bridge aft is about three fathoms under water. The ‘‘ Khiwindda” was an iron steamer, 1,330 tons register, having a crew of 28 hands. She was built at Sun- derland in 1878, and owned by Frederick Edwards of Cardiff, from whence she hailed.
Earl Spencer, Lord Lientenant of Ireland, replying to an address presented to him at Limerick, spoke in deprecation of forced emigration. He said that he believed care- ful aid to emigrants having prospects of success abroad was beneficial both to them and to the districts which they leave. He regretied the necessity for the passage of the crimes act, which was distasteful both to Parliament and to the Government, but he said he abhorred crimes which had ren- dered it necessary. In conclusion, Earl Spencer said he rejoiced that greater re- spect was now paid to law and order throughout the land.
The British Postmaster-General has ap- proved of the scheme for the insurance of letters containing money and_ other valuables. The rates are to be the same as for parcels: 1d. up to £5, and 2d. up to £10. The two insurance schemes will come into operation simultaneously, it appears, and as soon as working arrange- ments can be made. The announcement is also made by the postal authorities in Britain that on August Ist the department will accept at any post-office in the United Kingdom parcels intended for transmission by the Inland Parcels-Post, thoss not ex- ceeding 1lb. in weight having to be prepaid 3d. in ordinary postage stamps; exceeding llb. and not exceeding 3ibs, 6d.; exceed- ing 3lbs. and not exceeding 5lbs. 94 ; and exceeding 5ibs. and not exceeding 7lbs. 1s. The size of the parcel has a limit, thus, maximum length, 3 feet 6 inches; maximum length and girth combined 6 feet. Gun- powder, lucifer matches and live animals are excluded.
There are few men living whom th Queen of England has so much delighted to honor as Lord Dufferin, who now wear the decoration of the order of the Garter and thus subscribed to his name the initials K. G. in addition to the three set : K. P. G., C. M. G. and K. OC. B..-—with which he has already been honored. He started in life asa simple Irish baron, but obtained a peerage of the United Kingdom at the age of 25. Since 1850 he has receiv- ed no less than 17 distinct appointments or titles—more than one every other year. What Lord Dufferin really needs more than stars and ribbons are pounds and shillings. He has a fine Irish estate, b t has been rather Sheridanically careless, re- gardless of Sydney Smith’s sagacious aphorism, “Beware of carelessness. No fortune can stand it long.” His mother had not a penny when she married. and his wife had only a few thousand pounds. His plight would have been much worse but fora minority. Tuer potato bugs have made their appear- ance on the vines in. Major James Peake’s potato patch. They were ° discovered yesterday evening, and were promptly re- moved. Judging from this, we have no doubt that the bug will give our farmers some trouble this season. It would be well for them to be prepared whenever the pest makes its appearance, to give it a hot re- ception with London Purple and Paris Green. How to use London Purple in ex- terminating the potato bug is as follows :— Mix it into a smooth paste, and then add water in the proportion of three gallons to each ounce or forty-eight gallons to one pound, stir well, and apply by sprinkling with a whisk, or fine watering pot, taking care not to deluge the plant, but only cover with a fine spray.
