Mrs. Alan B. Cosh has return- ed from Victoria, B ., and the guest of her mother-in-la\v. at the Alexanders Apartments, West Street. Lieut. Alan Cosh left Esquimalt, B. C., on I-I.M.C.S. Ugan- da, Feb. 5th on a goodwill and training cruise. They will sail 30,000 sea miles before they reach the base in Halifax, last of June.

On‘ leaving Vancouver the Ugan- da sailed down the West Coast and will sail up the east coast of South America, passing through the Straits of Magellan and calling at

South American orts including Valparaiso, Chile, ontevldeo (off where the Nazi pocket battleship

Graf Spee was scuttled) and Rio de Janclro Brazil, before crossing the Atlantic to Capetown, South Africa. From Capetown the Ugan- da will sail up to Freetown, Sierra Leone on the west coast of Africa. Then back across the Atlantic to ‘Trinidad probably calling 1n there at Port of Spain and then con- tinuing on up throu h the West Indies to Halifax. Wth the Ugan- da will be a number of new nnval recruits for the Royal Canadian Navy who will undergo naval train- ing on the voyage. The 555 foot cruiser was built in Britain construction starting 1939. In De- cember 1942 she was commissioned by the Royal Navy. In 194B she was struck by a flying bomb off ‘Salerno and sailed for temporary repairs, She had extensive repairs at Charleston, S. C. and then put back in fighting trim. Later she was recommlssioned and became part of the Royal Canadian Navy sent to the Pacific war. hhe be- came the first Canadian shin to fire shells against the Japa. She supported sea and air strikes against Jap territory until sailing for Esquimalt. When the Uganda reaches her base in Halifax she may be iecommlssioned. Her sis- ter shlp the Ontario now at Es- uimalt la expected to be based .t ere, making her training cruises from there.

What are luxuries? If we were trying to define luxuries, we would say that they were something over and above the necessities of llfe— highpowered cars, fine clothes, jewels, sumptuous farksomethixig that only the rich can possess. Yet, in reality, the gieatest luxuries in the world have no price tag on them and are equally’ Wil-mn the Teach °l the poor and the wealthy.

Iiiiere is love, fo rexam-ple. It is only the poor who have the luxury of knowing that they an ' loved for themselves alone. The millionaire won- ders if his bride married him for the devotion he could give nor. or the matched pearls and mink coats he could buy her. The poor little rich girl suspects every man who conifs near her of being a fortune-hunter And so neither one over has the lneiffaible luxury of i-estlng in perfect faith and trust in the other. That is why there are more old maids and more bachelors and more divorces among the very rich than the poor.

LUXURY 0F FRIENDSHIP I

Friendship is another luxury on which the poor have a practical monopoly. The rich soon grow cynical and hard because their trust is betrayed so often. So many of the hands that are held out to them in the guise of friendshp have itching palms. The children of the very rich are practically fatherless and niotherless ‘They are turned over to h'i'ed nurses when they are born, reared by tutors and governesses, sent off to expensive schools and col- leges in their adolescenc , and they never really get acquainted with the man and woman who brought them into the world. Many and many a little plntocrat never knows the luxury of feeiing the softness of a mother's breast. or the miracle of x mother's lips that can kiss a hurt and make it well. or of having a father to whom one turned for help and guidance as one did to God

Work is still another luxury on which the poor have a prlorty. To do the work that absorbs onc's lime and thought and energy, to cre- ate, to build, to do something with ore's brains and hands that is worth while-that is the one infallible source of happiness that never falls. But it is a luxury in wh'ch t-iie rich are seldom privileged to indulge. They. poor souls, are reduced lo the sad expedient of boondoggling. of taking up hobbies in which they have no real interest, of playing games that- bore them, of killing time, which is the hardest work in the world.

And it is the poor oftenei- than the rioh who know the luxury of hav. lng a real home. Those who have a dozen palaces in which they spend a few weeks during the year are its homeless as any nomad who wanders over the desert. You have to make it with your own hands. with your own work. You have to mix your own sweat with its brick and mortar. You must have offered yourself up as a sacrifice on its altar before it becomes truly a home, the dearest place n earth.
