Farm Prices Index Up

OTTAWA ICP) - Prices of some Canadian farm products rose in July. boosting the farm prices Index by 8.5 points to 229.4 from 225.9 in June.

However. the index. based on 1085-39 prices equalling 100. was still 18.4 points below the 247.8 of July last year. the bureau of statistics reported Thursday.

The July rise resulted mainly from higher prices for livestock. dairy products. potatoes. poultry and eggs. Only some grain prices showed some tendency to decline. the bureau said. The western part of the yardstick is based only on initial grain prices paid farmers.

Glen Morrissey of the Expert- mental Farm. a surprise starter in yesterday's Essa Special match at Dundas. won the Pro- vincial Plowtng championship am the right to represent the province at the International Plowing Match in Ontario later this fall. Glen is from Cherry Valley and is an employee at the Experimental Farm here. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Morrissey. In second place was Wendell Jenkins of Mlllview who also is eligible to represent the province in the international. A several - time provincial champion in other years, Mr. Morrissey has not plowed for several years. He did not intend to compete this year but he was persuaded on Wednesday night to enter the match. As a result he went to Dundas yesterday and used a tractor and plow which he had never seen before. much less used. This constituted a handicap in itself but in spite of that he did "a splendid job" in the words of Judge Wylie Baird who gave him the nod for best crown. best finish and straight- est furrow in addition to the first place spot in the provincial championship match.
