Medica! authorities are generally agreed as to the value of olive oil med- icinally, finding it also a potent agent for any defects of the excretory ducts, especially the skin. Eczema has rapidly disappeared upon a @iscontinuance of starch foods and the substitution of a diet of fresh and dried fruits, milk, eggs and olive oil. The bencficial effects of the latter, when thus taken in con- junction with a fruit dict, have fre- quently been remarked in respect to the hair, nails and scalp, supplying to the sebaceous glands the oily substance which they secrete when in a healthy condition, and the absence of which is the cause of debility of the hair, fre- cuently ending in baldness, says The Scientific American. It has long been observed that those who treat olive oil as a common article of food and use it as such are generally healthier and in better condition than those who do not, and its therapeutic and prophylactic properties are very favorably regarded by medical men. It is known to be de- structive to certain forms of micro or- ganic life, and for the eradication of such from the system its internal use has been successfully resorted to.

Do not imagine that because a heavy thunderstorm is far away to leeward it is not likely to arise and wet you. Even if the wind is blowing right

all the more surely, for thunderstorms always travel against the wind.

The reason for this is that there is invariably a countercurrent of air above the breeze that you feel close to the earth, and this sky high wind blows in the opposite direction to the one which alone you can detect. Thus the tempest seems to work its way right through the wind’s eyes in a very con- trary sort of way.

Fog never does this; neither does ordinary rain-—at least very seldom— but snow or sleet some time works its way up wind just as the tempest does. Sheet lightning, by the way, is not a distinctive sort of light, but merely the reflection in the sky of a forked flash many miles away. You can tell how

number of seconds that pass between the flash and the peal. Each second stands for about a mile.—New York Herald.

Where They Are Mated by Lottery.

It was a cynic who said that mar- riage is a lottery, but in the province of Smolensk, in Russia, this aphorism has been reduced to a quarterly fact, for four times a year there is held the most remarkable lottery ever devised.

A charge of aruble is made for a ticket, only one prize is to be drawn, and it consists of the entiresum yielded by the sale of the tickets, amounting to 5,000 rubles. The lucky winner of the prize is bound to marry a certain dam- sel if he takes the 5,000 rubles. Should he be married he is at liberty to turn over the money and the lady to any friend whom he may wish to put in for such a good thing. Should the lady, however, refuse to marry the win- ner they are allowed to divide the ru- bles between them.

In the life of William Stokes, written by his son, which has appeared in Lon- don, it is told how Soyer was sent over to Dublin during the great famine to show the people how make soup. Stokes asked astarving beggar why she did not go and get some of the soup that was boing freely distributed.

The Cake Walk Is French.

The cake walk properly had its origin among the French negroes of Louisiana more than acentury ago. There is little doubt that it is an offshoot of some of the old French country dances. It rep- resents several of them in form, From New Orleans it spread over the entire south and thence north. It was found of convenience to the plantation ne- groes. They were not wedied by license, and it was seldom that the services of a preacher were called in.

At a cake walk aman might legiti- mately show his preference for a wom- en and thus publicly claim ber fora wife. In effect the cake walk was not different from the old Scotch marriage, which required only public acknowledg- ment from the contracting parties. So this festival became in some sense a wooing, an acceptance or rejection and a ceremony. This explains its popular- ity with the blecks outside of its beau- ties, with the accompaniment of music, which is competent at all times to com- mand negro support.

Cake walking bas improved, as do most things that are constantly practic- ed. It has lost its old significance in the south. Negroes now get married, when they marry at all, in the white folks’ fashion. It has, moreover, become a pantomime dance. Properly performed, it isa beautiful one. The cake is not much of a prize, though the negro has a sweet tooth.—New Orleans Times- Democrat.
