Sir Richard Cartwright refused to dis- cuss the matter on the basis of cable reports. He had confidence be said in the wisdom ant prudence of Mr. Laurier and he declined to believe that he had said anything he should not have said.

Sir Charles Tupper while justifying Mr. McNeil! for bringing the matter up, agreed that it would not be right to accept a press report as authoritative. Sir Charles could not believe that the Premier would in this way, repudiate not only the policy of both parties in thia country but his own most emphatic declarations.

The House then went into committee and discussed the tariff. Several changes were made, notably a reduction in the coal duiy. A customs charge of 54 cents a short ton will now be made,

The Premier of the Island, had accepted em- ployment from the Dominion Government thus placing himself under a personal obligation to the Liberal Executive. Sen- ator Ferguson hoped that the Government would refuse to submit the railway claims of the Island to arbitration, but would carry out the policy of the late Government with reference to the construction of the branch railways so much needed on the Island.

On the 15th inst;the Duke of Connaught reviewed the colonial troops who are to take part in the royal procession. The spectacle has called forth the following comment from one leading paper: “Never, in the palmiest days of ‘old Rome, was there a more significant and wordrous spectacle than that which took place yes- terday afternoon at the Chelsea barracks. Hiis Royal Highness the Duke of Con- naught, representing the Queen, inepectcd and reviewed the representative contingegt{s of the army of Great Britain. DIED.

At Thorndale, Ont., on 25th Feb. last Mrs. Angus McKialey in the 68th year of her age. She contracted la grippe a few years ago and pever recovered from its effects. The deceased was second eldest dauzhter of the late Mr. William Gillis of Ly ndale, P.E.Island, and sister of the Rev Jobnu Gillis, of Dundas. She left this Island early ir the sammer of 1853 and_ visited her triends bere in 1884. She has left many friends on this Island as wel] as in Ontario to mourn the irreparable loes of a good upright woman.
