Stipendiary Magistrate's Court.

Tue Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court was apparently the centre of attraction this forenoon, judging from the crowd that as- sembled to hear the small number of cases disposed of.

The first case called was Thomas Flynn’s prodigal son John, who was arrested on complaint of his parent. John is a lazy, good-for-nothing fellow, who does little else than drink liquor and keep his father’s residence in a constant broil by his dis- ordealy acts. He was sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labor for vagrancy.

James Wright, ‘‘ the native of Coolie,” was arrested yesterday on warrant for as- saulting Thomas Michael, Steward of the Ethel Blanche with a knife. The magis- trate read the charge and Wright quickly responded: ‘‘I cut ‘im Sir.” He stated that at dinner time he went to the steward and asked for some pepper for the hands. The steward wished to be asked more grace- fully than the manner which Wright asked, and dealt him a blow on the face. Wright then drew a sheath-knife and stabbed him through the muscle of the left arm. The magistrate informed him there was nothing the law was so severe on as using Knives, and then sentenced him to six months im- prisonment with hard labor.

The next called was an assault case which occurred between two tonsorial artists. The complainant, whose name is Joseph Gillis, states that on Thursday night last at a late hour, he was going from a party with a young lady ; when at the corner of Rich- mond and Queen Streets a young man came up and took the lady from him. The defendant, W. McMahon, then caught him by the throat and struck him three or four times in the face, blacking his eyes and bleeding his nose.

Magistrate—Have you anything to say to this, McMahon ?

McMahon to Gillis—Are you not ashamed of yourself? Did you not know I was en- gaged to that girl!

Gillis—I did not know anything about it. The girl did not want to go with you; she held on to my arm.

McMahon — Were you acquainted with the young lady ?

Gillis—No; I was asked by another young man to go home with her.

Mc Mahon— Were you asked to the party !

Gillis—No ; I went to the door and was asked in.

McMahon to Magistrate—Your Honor, on leaving the party I was in act of putting on my coat, when this young man came along and dragged away my girl. I put on my coat and said, ‘‘Young man, you made a mistake; you got my girl.” I caught hold of her by the arm.

Gilus—No! Your Honor! she canght hold of mine.

McMahon—Your Honor, he caught her arm by the inside, and I caught her by the outside ; and we walked abreast down to the corner. I then said, ‘‘Young man, you came far enough, you got to get back ;” and I took him by the throat and gave hima few shakes. He insulted the girl.

Gillis—The girl did not want to go with him.

Magistrate—You better get your girls first, if you want to go home with her from a party after this.

The case was adjourned for witnesses.

Pownal Street, on Saturday night, was— according to the evidence taken at the Police Court this forenoon—a hideous den. Crowds of rough fellows marched to and fro,threatening to punmel our brass mount- ed guardians. At one o'clock a crowd as- sembled at Mr. C. Reilly’s corner and or- ganizee a general disturbance. From the evidence, we learn, that a young man was questioning the character of another who had previously assaulted him, and in a loud voice he exclaimed, ‘‘Kelly is down on me because I am from the County Monaghan.” Kelly overheard him and appeared on the scene and began a small riot. Those who commenced were oversteeped in ‘‘old ben- zine,’ and the more peaceable ones en- deavored to restore quiet. This resulted in a greater disturbance, and two of peace- makers, namely: Power and Crowley, in- dulged in a violent ‘‘set-to,” out of which the latter emerged with a most disfigured countenance. At the Court this mourning James McIntyre, James McKenna, Dennis Higgins, James Crowley and Michael Power appeared for being engaged in this disturbance. The police or witnesses sum- moned, were apparently ignorant of the oc- currence, and Crowley was called to the witness stand. His testimony, however, did not tally with the statements of the others. The Magistrate discovered that he was equally to blame. It would then be unjust to let him clear and punish the others; and in justice he had to acquit all concerned—an act which he said was sorely against his grain.
