He testified-to making large pre- sents of diamonds and jewelry to Engineer Perley and Mrs, Perley, and to giving a hun?red dollars to a clerk in Mr. Perley’s oiiice four years ago, whose name he did not know and never inquired. Sir Joha lhompson insisted that Murphy go to the Pablic Works Department and identify the clerk, but Murphy claimed to be too sick to remain long in Ottawa, and obtained per- mission to go to Quebec, promising to ree His whole testi’ mony is thoroughly discredited. Mr. arte is so disgusted withthe disclosures that he threatens to abandon the case and his seat. Mr. Perley, on hearing Murphy’s charges against him, immediately demanded to be examined regarding them, and he will be heard this morning.

The Devon and Exeter (Eng.) Daily Gazette contains a long account of the mar- riage of Miss U. E. Calley, only surviving child ot the late Charles Calley, of Haber- tonford, with Fredk. Eustace, eldest son of Rev. Maurice Swabey,{Vicar of St.Thomas, Exeter, and formerly of Prince Edward Island, which took place at St. James, Piccadilly, London, on the 3rd of June last. Judge and Mrs. Hensley and Miss Hensley were among the invited guests. The marriage is spoken of as one of the fashionable events of the day. A later issue of the same paper contains a description of another fashionable wedding which took place on Wednesday afternoon, June 17th, at St. Savicur’s Church, Walton Street, Knightsbridge, ia the presence of a large number of invited guests, The principals were Mr. Rennell Coleridge, only son 0 Mr. W. R. Coleridge, J. P., D. L., of Sal- ston, O tery, St. Mary’s, and Miss Ger- trude Swabey, only child of the late Mr. Fredk. Swabey, of Corytown Park, Ax- minster, who formerly lived in P. E. Island.

CHAPPELLE. ——__— po —————____ The Scot Act in King’s County. THE LOvAL PREMIER AIDS FORCEMENT. Srr,—Some time ago a writ was issued from the Supreme Court to imprison a Scott Act offender of Montague Bridge, who had appealed from the decision of the Magistrate’s Court at that place ; and who, having lost his case, was mulcted in heavy costs, orin default of payment was to be imprisoned in the County Jail. The document was placed in the hands of a Sheriff's bailiff, who energetically pro- ceeded to carry out its mandate. In con- sequence, the violator of the Scott Act was salely placed in Georgetown Jail, where he spent his term. When the bailiff applied to Mr. Peters for payment of his fees, he was told to get the Clerk of the Crown—Mr. Weeks—to certify to the correctness of his bill, and that he would then be paid. The bailiff did so, and after considerable wait- ing at length was able to interview the Attorney-General. Presenting the bill again, the Hon. Mr. Peters, notwithstanding his promise, told the poor bailiff that he would have to travel some forty miles to get another of- ficial to certify to the bill. This the bailiff indignantly retused to do, and tearing up the paper threw it at the feet of the honor- able gentleman, saying that he would use in the same manner any further documents sent to him in Scott Act cases. Now, think Ithis conduct onthe partofthe Leader of the Government is highly repre- hensible, and calculated to prevent the en- forcement of the Scott Act in this County, for no person will carry out the law if this is the treatment they are to get. Mr. Bell and other prominent supporters of Mr. Peters, who are in favor of the Scott Act, should bring their Leader to task abut this matter, and compel him to pay the bailiff's fees, especially as they only amounted Lo four or five dollars. The Guardian should also see that this case is satisfactorily settled; for unless it is so, no bailiff will be found in King’s County to act on cases arising out of a breach of the Scott Act; and the law might as well be repealed.
