McSwain, of Santa Clara, Cali- | fornia, and her daughter Amy, who have been visiting friends and relatives on the Island during the last wiater, left to re- turn home by the Princess this morning, first visiting some friends and relatives in Nova Scotia. Mrs. McSwain’s health is cousiderably improved as a result of her visit to her native land.

Mr. John P. Joy has received a letter from his son Ernest, who is now in Daw~ son City. Mr. Joy reporte the lelanders in Dawson doing weil, especially Messrs Dixon and McRae who are working min- ing claims and expect that the “‘c:ean up” will net something handsome. Mr. Joy has also sent home some copies of the Klondike Nugget a emal! daily paper the subscription price of which is $40 a year or 25c a copy.

Carroll of the schooner Niagara, from Grand Banks re- ports that on April 6th George Campbell and Thomas Docdy, two members of the crew, while attending trawls in foggy weather, got astray. Ae it blew astrong breeze shortly afterward, it is feared that their dory was swamped and both drowned. Campbell belonged to Prince Edward Ieland, but leaves a wife in this

city.

Gait Misruts,.—A Winnipeg despatch eays: The report of the royal commission on the financial condition of the province will be msde public when the legislature reassembles May 7. The report is now in the hands of Hon. Mr. Davideon. It ehows that there is a cash deficit of $91,000 due the Imperial bank and oute standing liabilities of $156,000, despite the statement made by ex: provincial sec-~ retary McMillan that there was no deficit. Thie, with the $148,000 which Mr. Green- way intended to give the C.P. R makes a toial of $395,000 which the people had no cognizance of.

TeasinG «a CHINAMAN.— Quite a little excitement was caused on Great George Street last night for afew minutes. A number of smal) boys had been teasing and bothering one of the Chinamen. After standing it tor some time he started to chase them with a long stick in bis hand. The boys ran fast; the Chinaman ran faster and was rapidly gaining on the offenders. But one of the piles of mud which the street cleaners had shovelled up duriog the day was inthe way. The boys ran round it; the poor Chinaman, not no- ) ticing it in the dark, measured his length in the mud. It was juet as well for the boys that he did so, for, considering the humor that the Celestial was in, he would undoubtedly have made the boys decide never again te torment a Chinese laundry- man.

and the Feiries Revenge. The songs and recitations were also excellent. This entertainment will be presented to the public on Thursday evening next by the children of the militia officere of this city, and should be liberally patronied as the proceeds are for the wives of those pow in South Africa.
