It is generally conceded that chocolate pudding is not necessarily fatal and that it is not an established home of the cholera microbe. Professor Hankin therefore set out to trace the microbe to its lair. He fou%@i the deadly thing in a water pot in the kitchen, but he ascertained that this pot had beea filled at a pure spring. The dishcloth used in carrying the pot, however, had been dried on an infected sand bank. Pro- fessor Hankin then proceeded to demon- strate by a beautiful experiment the deadly nature of this particular pud- ding. He took three of the ingredients —milk, eggs and gelatin—under abso- lutely sterilizing conditions, made a ‘‘oulture,’’ inoculated it, cooked it and produced 9,000,000 cholera microbes to the cubic centimeter. Indian cooks who prepare chocolate pudding for govern- nient sabibs in the present state of af- fuirs in India are in danger of sudden trouble.—New York Times.

The Troubles of a Town.

The virtue of consistency is giving the citizens of Somersworth, N. H., a lot of trouble. First, Mayor Hanson caused the arrest of those who sold candy and soda water on Sunday, in or- der that the Sunday law might be con- sistently enforced. Then one of the men arrested thought that consistency re- quired the arrest of the mayor, who runs a livery stable, whieh hires horses on Sunday. The mayor was fined $5. Lastly, a citizen threatens to have the authorities of the Methodist church ar- rested for the unnecessary ringing of the church bell on Sunday. The result of ali this is that nearly everybody in the town is angry with somebody else. —New York Tribune.
