A New Wrinkle in Business.

I found a new wrinkle the other day in the way of business) A man came up to my library, first sending up “his card, from » prominent publishing house, and I did vot know but that they had discovered creat points in me, und had finally sent for me, When the man entered, with a certain astride and beaming eye, 1 felt disappointed. He did not have the ruined and. woe- begone air of literary managers, pub- lisuers, ete. There was an acquilinity about his nose aod a metallic luster in his eyes, and a slight kink in his hair, which reminded me of some one I had seen before. Said he: “1 want to pre- sent your little son George, who used to come Around on Twenty-third street and play at my house, with a bookcase. All 1 ask of you is to put the books in it, Wewillsell you our cyclopedia at the low price of $65, and give you two years to pay for itin. Here is the caso; let me show you a picture of it.”

The famous silver gilt dinner service which was presented to the late Lord Ellenborough when he resigned the office of Goverpor-General in India, bas been purchased by the Maharajsh of Jhoroe, and itis to be dispatched to India in a few days. The service con- sists of thirteen decorative pieces, all profusely ornamented and admirably executed. EALED TENDERS addressed to the _under- _signed and endorsed “‘Tender for the Welland Canali,” will be received at this office until the arrival of the Eastern and Western mails on MONDAY, the 25th day of JANUARY next (1886), for raising the wails of the locks, weirs, &c., and increasing the height of the banks of that part of the Welland Canal between Port Dalhousie and Thorold, and for deepening the Summit Level between Thorold and Ramey’s Bend, near Humberston.

The works, throughout, will be let in Sections,

Maps of the several localities, together with plans and descriptive specifications, can be seen at this office on and after MONDAY. the lth day of JANUARY next ()s86), where printed forsss of tender can be obtained. A like class of information relative to the works north of Allan burg will be furnished at the Resident Engineer’s Office, Thorold; and for works south of Allan- burg, plans, specifications, &c., may be seen at his Kesident Engineer’s Office, Welland.

Contractors are requested to beer* in mind that tenders will not be considered unless made strictly in aceordance with the printed~ forms, and, in the ease of firms, except there are attached the actual signatures, the nature of the occupation and place of residence of each mem- ber of the same; and further, an accepted bank cheque for the sum of Two Thousand Dellars or more—according to the extent of the work on the seciion—must accompany the _ respective tenders, which sutn shall be forfeited if the party tendering declines entering into contract for the works, at the rates statedin the offer submitted.

The amount required in each case will stated on the form of tender.

The cheque or money thus sent in will be returned to the respective parties whose tenders are not accepted.

This Department does not, however, bind itself to accept the lowest or oy tender.
