yesterday captured the village of Rimad- bang and recovered a quantity of supplies. by the enemy to within amile of the British camp.’

On the British side nine men, including Colonel Hadow, were wounded.

The confidence of the insurgent triber- men is increasing, and they are offering « determined front in al! directions.

The British officers say that the tribes- men excel in guerilla warfare and are wonderful skirmishers.

The enemy is fully suppl.ed with am- munition and large reinforcements are joining the insurgent camps.

The tribesmen have tmaseed twenty thousand men at Sempbaga Pass, where they are making rifle pits and strengthen- ing their defences. Though hard Sghting is possibly in store it is boped that tie

pass will be carried without a great effort. Meanwhile, “tis bad news that the

tribesmen have begun to operate on the British lines of communication. The fear is that, finding this the most successful means of delaying the British advance, they will detach still larger bodiee to attack the British convoys and cut up the eacorts.

Yesterday the tribesmen harrassed the British camp at Klangabur by constant well directed fire. Nearly thirty non commissioned officers and men were wounded.

A Policeman Shot Dead,

New York, Oct. 27.— Policeman Fred- erick Smith was shot dead while attempt— ing to arrest a robber last night.

Col, Mathias, commander of the Gordon Highlanders, addressed his men in thie etirring appeal: “‘ Men of the Gordon Highlanders—our general says that position must be taken atall costes.

The men gave a ringing cheer and when the advance sounded they bounded: afier their leader, the officers at the head. When they came down the slope after the suc- cessful charge they were spontaneously cheered by all the other regiments. The Gourkas also behaved magnificently throughout the engagement. Captain Robineen of the Gourkhas, acted wii’ the greatest gallantry. He led his men acrees the fire zone to cover. Finding the force there insufficient, he returned ;alone over the death trap. He was morially wounded while leading the second rush to support the first contingent.

Hawivax, Oct. 24. — he Leineter regiment arrived from Bermuda yesterday to relieve the Royal Berks. They marched to the barracke without the usual courtesy: of the reyimental band from the parting regiment. The Berks were aboard the trooper today, and again there was no music, asthe Berke’ instruments were packed on board ship and the Leinsters for some reaeou were not disposed to turn out. The explanation of this remarkable absence of complimentary bands to each other ow such an occasion ig said to be that the two regiments are not on good terms.
