Some hopes are entertained of a European Conference, to meet at Vienna, to determine the conditions of peace between Russia and Turkey.

No objections to this plan of settlement have yet been raised by Russia.

The Chamber of Deputies at Bucharest are afraid that Russia is desirous of annex- ing a slice of Roumania to her dominions.

Onrruary.—QOn referring to the death of Mrs. Aitken, wife of Wm. B. Aitken, Esq., which is recorded in another column, many of our readers will lament the very amiable and christian lady, who was one of the oldest and most respected inha- bitants of this town. The words of regret expressed by all whoknew her, and the deep sympathy felt for her family, are far more eloquent than any words of ours. She was respected and admired by everybody, and t ie loss sustained by her bereaved husband and family is equally shared by a _ wide- spread circle of people in this community. were not wanting hints that his delay in reaching the house on the morning of the funeral had suggested to several keon-eyed mourners the hypothesis of apple-jack. Lixe a straightforward man, he at once went tothe ehief mourner and explained thas he had acted in strict accordance with the request of the undertaker, and that his tardy arrival at the funeral was due to the failurs of the undertaker tu send a curiage. His ex»lanation was accepted, and he was informed tla; the mendac‘ous undertaker hal been foremost in charging him with neglecting -his duty. An inspectioa of that person's bill was then made, and among the items were a charge of five dollirs for kid gloves, and another charge for a carriage— all of which it was alleged had been fur- nished to the minister.

A determination—made strictly in a spirit of love—to “‘ get square ” with that under- taker immediately took possession of the minister's mind, and he hastened to put it into execution, so that the sun might uot go cown upon his wrath. Arming himself with his black cotton gloves, he sought the undartaker, and promising that he was, so to spzak, rolling in gloves, expreased a de- sire to return them and secure their value in money. ‘The undert:ker, with a sal but affable smile, consented, remarking that he had another funeral nearly ready—provided tie corpse did mot recover—and could easily use the gloves on that occassiou, Ac- cordingly, the black cotton gloves were hinied to him, and he produ:xd twenty- five cents with which to pay for them, as- suring thé minister that they were worth precisely that sum. Then the good maa, rising to the level of the oczasioa, and winking to the utmost extent consistent with his holy profession, remarked : ‘‘ You are mistaken ; your bill shows thai these gloves cost five dollars.” With a groan of angu's’: the wicked undertaker paid out the five dollars and withdrew to the inmost re- cesses of his shop, there to calm his mind with coffins and forget his humiliating de feat in the contemplation of hearse-plumes.

This is the firat instance in which an un- dertaker has been signally defeated. Let us hope that the noble minister was only the pioneer of a revolt which will overthrow the undertaker’s baneful despostism, and give to every minister the right of burying his private corpses according to the dic- tates of his own conscience and his personal purse.
