THE HAIRDRESSER. { He Tells Stories of Human Vanity as Dis- played In His Business. |

The hairdresser was, as is not unusual with members of his profession, in a talk- ative mood. He was also inclined to medi- tate upon the vanities of humankind, which he has admirable opportunities to observe.

‘“‘Tf it wasn’t for the fact that people think so much of their looks,’’ he said, ‘‘we should lose three-quarters of our busi- ness and might as well shut upshop. It | is wonderful to me, although you'd think I might be used to it by this time, to see how much trouble people will take about their hair. Just now the most fashionable shade of hair among women is a deep red- dish brown or bronze. ‘To get that color we bleach the hair to a blonde sbade and then dye it to the proper bronze tone. It is a very slow job, for there must be five or six applications of the bleach, and then the dyeing takes a good deal of time. The whole process requires an entire day, and women will come in here and sit from morning until evening, never losing pa- tience if they only think the result will be vecowing and stylish.

‘*But that’s only one of the ways in which they show their vanity about hair. There are lots of others. Why, I had a woman come in the other day who wanted all her own hair cut off, so that she could wear a Wig. I looked at her in surprise. | Iler head was covered with thick, soft, naturally wavy hair of the finest quality, but what do you suppose was her objection | to it? It was gray! I took out the bair- ! pins, and the beautiful mass of hair fell in ripples far below her waist.

‘* ‘But, madam,’ I said, ‘it isa shame to cut off this hair. 16 is magnificent.’

~ or said, ‘I will not have gray hair. Cutit, I tell you. I wanta}| brown wig.’

‘*So, of course, I did as I was told. ‘The | hair dropped to the floor, and Iwas glad, I tell you, when I found she didn’t want to take it away with her. For, you know, handsome gray hair is the rarest and bhard- est to get in our business. Most of it cones from abroad, What do you suppose that woman's hair was worth to me? Thirty dollars—not a cent less. She wew} away with a heavy brown wig, ven was hideous compared with tha hair she had just lost.

“It isn’t fair, though, to lay all the van- ity to the women. Lots ef men come here at Peular iniervals to have their hair Curled. Oh, itis true. There are plenty of nien vain enough for that,’’ he added as his auditor looked incredulous. ‘‘But 1 must admit I was dumfounded awhile ago when a man came to have his hair bleach- ed. I made it a golden blond for him and then curled it, according to his orders. But 1 hope he won’t come again. Men who have their hair curled hayen't any too biuch sense, and a fellow who would have his bair bleached must be wrong in his head somewhere. I don’t care to work for crazy folks,’’ and the haigdresser put the finishing touches to the shampoo which he had been administering to his customer as he talked. —New Yerk Tribune.
