The Candidates in King’s.

We must confess to regret that Dr. Mauttart chosen to bear the standard of the Liberal- Conservative Party King’s County. There is no man who better deserves the ennfidence and support of the electors of King’s than Dr. Muttart. But Dr, Muttart has voluntarly withdrawn in favor of Mr. John McLean, who has his cordial support.

Macdonald and McLean are now, there- fore, the candidates for King’s. As leading and highly respected men for business, as vigorous and experienced politicianr, as men prepared under al) circumstances to do battle for the tunnel and for reciprocity, | they will, we feel sure, be successful in | their contest with the ‘‘tw. doctors.”

The Meciting, Last. Evening. t

Tue canvass for the Liberal Conserva- tive candidates of Queen's County was auspiciously opened by one of the largest, most representative and most enthusiastic meetings ever heldin Market Hall. Premier Macleod’s addresa bristled with points. We have no doubt that he spoke not fer mere effect in the election, but in sincerity and truth, when he recommended Mr. Blake to the electors as ‘* one of the most upright men he had ever met” —‘‘a man true to the core.” Queen's County is, indeed, to be congratulated upon the character of the mon chosen to do battle for ,the tunnel and foc reciprocity uader the leadership of Sir John Macdonaid. Me. Ferguson passed unscathed through one of the severest ordeals to which a man could be subjected. Mr. Blake is recognized, not alone by Pre- mier McLeod but by everyone, 4s a man of unstained honor. Character tells in the long run; and character, united to genuine, uative ability, will tell—notwithstanding the slanders of the Grits—in the canvass for votes in Queen's County.

One of the best points made by Premier McLeod was that by which he proved, on Mr. Laurier’s own showing, that the tunnel could not be bvilt by the Liberal party, which has over and over again denounced the undertaking of great public works, which is pledged to apply Sir Richard’s ‘‘pruning knife’’ to public expenditures, which contemplates a loss of eight or nine millions of dollars of revenue per year.

Dr. MeNeill's speech was in the highest degree creditable to his head and to bis heart. Dr. McNeill never appeared in better form or to better advantage than he did when, sinking every other consider- atioa, he did justice to the eff rts of Senator Howlau and declared for the tunnel and for reciprocity in accordance with the policy of Sir John Macdonald. He pointed out that the securing of geographical unity in respect to Prince Edward Island is a duty incumbent upon both the Dominion and Province; and argued most convincingly that the party which had procured the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway and all the great public worka of Canada~— the party led by Sir John Macdonald—is the party to procure the building of the tunnel,

How. Donald Ferguson's speech was one of the ablest political addresses that we have heard delivered im this Province. Mr Ferguson is fall of vigor and full of confi- dence in the cause of the tunnel. This has been advanced notwithstanding the sneers and ridicule of Mr. L. H. Davies and Mr. Welsh at ** Howlan’s stovepipe concern.’ He dealt with the trade policy of the two parties in masterly style, reviewing the different phases which have, in the past few years, been presented by the Party of Shifts, under the guidance of a weak and vacillating leader, inspired and controlled by Mr. Erastus Wiman.

mitted ut various times resolutions urging the Government to take action in respect to reciprocity and that the Government party have voted these resolutions down (1) because they were introduced as motions of want of confidence, and (2) because pub- lic opinion in the States was not, in the opinion of Sir John Macdonald, ready to admit of a treaty.

7 Bat public opinion in the States has, since the passage of the McKinley Bill, undergone a change, as witness the return to Congress of a large majority of those who were parties to the Mills Bill, under which it was proposed to abolish or reduc2 the duties on many articles which are con- stantly exported to the States by Canada. This being the fact, Sir John Macdonald

The ballots cast showed a large m» jority for Hon. Messrs. Ferguson and Blake, and and their nomination was made unanimous after the first vote.

Hon. Mr. Ferguson then made a rousing speech, brimful of points against the Op- position; and, after cheers for the candi- dates, the meeting was brought to a close.
