Australian Dairying

The Australian Government recently coin- plated an exhaustive investigation into the ef- fect of wartime restrictions and manpower problems nn the dairying industry of Australia, particularly in respect to butter production. As the result of various recommendations sulnuil- ted to the Australian Cabinet, the Prime i\Iin- ister has announced that sn snual subsidy up to lpproximatel $7,500,000 will be made available to the dairying industry as a primary measure to place it on a wartime basis. The subsidy is considered necessary to ensure adequate supplies Ind maintain producers and workers in the in- dultry under reasonable living conditions. It was realized that rationalization of this industry was essential to maintain the supply of dairy pro- ducts with the constantly increasing demand for personnel in the armed services and to meet urgent United Kingdom needs in aildition to civilian consumption. Payment of the subsidy began October I, 194s, and the Australian Arbitration Court has
