THE TOILET.

Ihe Uare of the Complexion and Hands.

In some cases a poor complexion arises mainly from lack of exercise. Women who live an entirely sedentary life have a slow circulation and usually a bad digestion, and these are fertile causes of a muddy appearing skin. Exercise gives rapidity to the move- ment of the blood, stimulates digestion and calms the nerves, and is frequently more beneficial than any sort of medicine, a'though it shcud not be indulged in immediately after meals. Physicians are beginaing to recognise the fact that drugs are not the most potent restoratives and that exercise, peace of mind, congenial society and recreation are not merely luxuries but necessities if good health is to be pre— served.

Chapped and rough lips are not only painful, but disfiguring, and it is advisable never to go into the open air without previously using a_ little glycerine or vaseline upon the mouth. To moisten the lips with the tongue has a drying effect upon the skin ulti- mately and the habit is one to be rigor- ously avoided.

Toilet soap of inferior quality is ex tremely injurious to the complexion. Only the best soap should be employ-— ed, and that does not nesessarily mean the soap most expensively got up with lace and ribbons. Pure glycerine or olive oil soap unscented is very good and net specially costly.—Judic Chollet.

THE DINING ROOM.

Its Proper Furnishings and Appro- priate Decorations.

The dinning room should always be kept simple in style, the table with its decorations being the center of at- traction. Pictures may easily be dis— pensed with, but if they appear at all they should be few, large and dignified, Portraits are often placed in the dining room, but the old fashion of fruit and game studies is becoming obsolete. A rich paper of tapesry, with decorations of old china, is usually preferred to paintings. Green, brown or red are favorite colorings for the wall, and Dutch blue is also employed. Solid, rich tones are usually chosen, and the furniture, which should not be crowd- ed, is simple, large and substantial. Besides the tableand chairs a side- board to hold the silver and a side- table for use in serving are necessary, but nothing more is absolutely re- quisite, A tall clock and a glazed china closet are attractive accessories, and ascreenin front of the pantry door is always desirable, but a couch or sofa is quite out of place. The furniture should be of oak or darker wood and the screen of tapestry, leather or similar rich, deeply colored material; The table should be the centez of brilliancy, dain:iiess .and beauty. There ought to be low lights—lamps or groups of candles—at each ccrner in addition to the light suspended overhead, and the vases and other dec- orations should also be low in order not to obstruct the view of the ‘guests. —Judic Chollet.

A Few Don'ts.

Don’t stand the baby upon its feet because it happens to be unusually strong; remember there is always danger of making its limbs deformed for life. Nearly all bow-legged men were allowed to stand upon their tect too early.

Don’t neglet the babys scalp untill it is covered with a scurf or crust. If this should happen apply the yolk of egg rubbing upon the scalp thoroughly with the fingers, and after leaving it on for a time remove with warm soap suds, after which use a fine tooth comb to get the crust loose ; then brush gently until it is all removed.

Remember that circulation is feebler at the extremities than any where else, and keep the hands and feet of the baby warmly clad in winter.—Ameri- can Journal of Health.

Care of the Hair.

The best hair dressers agree that the hair should notbe washed toofrequently, as the practice deprives it of its natural oil. It is urged as another reason for the more frequent baldness of men that they wash their hair or wet it too frequertly. “The hair should be sham- pooed once a month or, if very oily, once in three weeks. Women who live in cities can have this done by protessionals, the whole process taking an hour including the the time needed for thoroughly drying the hair. It is not a difficult task to shampro the hairat home. A very good mixture for the purpose is made of the yolk of an egg, a teaspoonful of green soap, to be obtained of any druggist a teaspoon- ful of cologne and a cupful of hot water. These ingredients should be stirred together and then applied thor- oughly to the roots of the hair with a shampooing brush, the hair being divided into small partings for the pur- pose. The lather is st'ff and will not run into the face and eyes. When the scalp has been thoroughly cleansed, the soap should be washed out and the hair rinsed and dried as quickly as possible. ‘This can be done by rubbing it with a towel while the head is held near the register or stove. The brisk friction with the towel is excellent for the scalp and prevents the cold one is liable to take if the hair is left to dry by evapor- ation.— Delineator.
