Life at Balmoral.

A Tory contemporary gives what professes to be an acceunt of the daily life at Balmoral which Truth says wil! considerably astonish the people about the Court. It is stated that “breakfast is on the table at eight, and of course everybody is expected to be present.” The Queen breakfasts in her own room, and alone, about nine; and Royalties staying at the Castle take their meal at any hour they please, either in their/ apartments or in the small dining-room. A family breakfast is unbeard of at Court ; andthe only meal to which persons not of Royal blood are invited is dinner. There is the same rigid etiquette at Bulmorsl as is maintained at Windsor. The Queen walks after breakfast for a short time, and is then usually absorbed in business and corres- pondence till luncheon. A messenger leaves London every morning for Bal- mora], being sent three daysa week from Whitehall, and the other three from the Palace. He arrives at the Castle at daybreak, and the boxes are sent back by another messenger, who leaves about one, and reaches London next morning.

_ Woy Girls Don’t Marry.

“A great deal has been said,” remark ed a lady clerk in the Treasury Depart- ment, “about why our girls don’t marry. So far I have only heard the men quoted and they say a great deal about the girls losing their charms and becoming less feminine by mixing with the business world and about wantiog to better their condition by marriage. Now, if you reporters really want to know something about the matter, why don’t you go to

the women themselves? J'il just tell you one thing, and it’s what

I believe to be an important reason. When a girl is kept at home and sur- rounded by girls, and hears of the great- ness of the masculine part of the genus homo, and only meeting him at picnics, and in the parlor, she conceives rather an eXalted idea of what he really is. Then when she secures a position and meets them as they are away from gas- light’s uncertain glitter, her idea of the actnal fact falls considerably from what it was in her inexperience, even if she still retains the ideal in her mind. The tact is, we are like Diogenes —we are hunting for an honest man. We know more about them than we did, and so the right man is naturally harder to find.” — Washington Republican. satis

Battenberg’s Garter.

Mr. Labouchre says:—I am sorry to hear that in accordance with the usual discreditable practice, an application is to be made to Parliament for the amount of the tees charged for admitting Prince Heury of Battenberg to the order of the Garter. The vote will certainly be opposed, andit isto be regretted that the Queen should have been so ill-advis- ed; for I hear that Her Majesty was dis- posed to pay the amount herself, but that some wooden-headed officials about the Court persisted that this would be creatiog an inconvenient precedent. It strikes me that it will be considerably more incon- venient if the vote be rejected by the House of Commons. Within the last two years over £1,000 has been paid for the Garter fees of the Prince of Wales’ sons, and including the cost of special missions, upwards of £106,000 has been paid by the public during the preseut reign on account of the * extra ” (Royal) Knights of this Order. When the Queen came to the throne there were only five or six “extras” but now there are no fewer than twenty- eight, the blue ribbon having of late years been scattered about Europe with a very ill-jadged profusion. Nothing is more absurd than the custom of invari- ably presenting a Royal Knight with the full trappings of the State costume, which cost some £500, and are never worn. There is only one case known during the last thirty years of a kuight haviug arrayed himself in bis full dress, and this was fa certain German princelet who desired to have his portrait painted in this quaint garb.
