ED COM OUTLINE PROGRAMS

The first meeting of the UPEI Ed- ucation Committee was held last Wednesday evening at Duffy Science Centre.

Government announces new ed. requirements

The Prince Edward Island Dept. of Education has announced new re- gulations governing the granting of Letters of Authority to graduates with an Arts or Science Degree, BUT without an approved Teacher Education program. The new regulat- ions become effective January 31, 1971.

According to the new regulations a person who has an Arts or Science Degree, whether a Bachelors or Masters, without any teacher train- ing will no longer be issued a Letter of Authority.

A person who has a BA. or a B. Sexand completes one education course may be granted a Letter of Authority with a salary of Certific- f ate_2; ‘If he has completed a minim-

um of three Education courses he may be granted Certificate 3.

Any person who has completed a Masters Program and has complet- ed a minimum of two education courses may receive a letter of authority with Certificate 5.

Any person who has completed five full credits plus methods in ed- ucation and a Masters in Arts or Science, and is able to present a principals’ recommendation of sat- isfactory teaching, he may qualify for a Certificate 6 license.

Any Arts or Science graduate who was issued a letter of authority to teach prior to the effective date of these new regulations will still remain under the previous regulations, if he continues to teach in the Province of Prince Edward Island.

The meeting opened'with a re- port by former committee Chairr man Reg Phalen, who reviewed last year’s program. Questions were ask- ed from the floor concerning the continuation of these programs. ‘

Martin Kenny, nominee for com- mittee Chairman, took the chair to discuss this year’s education pro- gram.

Peter Prebble suggested in a state- ment from the floor that the Com- mittee consider the possibility of setting up an educational program with the Lennox Island Indians. De- bate arose over this question, as the program would have to meet with the desires of the Band Council on the Island.

Griffith hunts for smarts

Jim Griffith, Director of Student Services, is presently seeking four students with “instant reflexes" and “excellent general knowledge.” He’s not quite sure how to find them.

The students will be chosen-— by a process not yet determined— to represent UPEI in a national TV game, CTV’s “University Chal- lenge”. The fifty-five. college in- stitutions across Canada have all been invited to participate in the question and answer competition. UPEI is scheduled to meet an op ponent not yet designated on Dec. 13, episode12 of the series.

' Griffith wants students and fac- ulty to submitrnames and to sug- gest a procedure for choosing the four representatives. He intends to have them chosen “sometime in the first week of October.” They and a coach/chaperone, prob-

The Committee also discussed the possibility of working with the Ch’- town Tenant’s Union. This proposal was tabled until a later date.

Dennis MacKay’s statement that Committee programs would have to be carefully considered in the light of a shortage of Student Union funds led to a series of questions concemin g the Committee’s ability -to organize teach—ins and the app— earance of special speakers. The valv ue of such programs was questioned as student participation in these ac- tivities has always been light.

A more detailed outline of pro- posals is expected to be presented

at next meeting.

$34,000 GRANT To 1 S.U. CENTRE

If you Were a student at UPEI last year, then you probably remember the dis- cussion around campus last year concerning the dispos- al of the remaining assets of St. Dunstan’s Student Uni— on. The total amount in question was $34,000.

During the spring the mon- ey was granted to the Univ- ersity of Prince Edward Is- land to be used for setting up a Hall of Fame to comm- erate outstanding students at the former institutions, PWC and SDU; and the re- mainder used for renovat- ions to the UPEI rink.

The money will be used to help pay the cost of the Student Center.

In the new Student Cen- ter a plaque will be located signifing that $34,000 was granted by the former SDU Student Union towards bu-

ilding the new Student Center.
