We are had an opportunity to test the Parent Safety Lamp and Lamp Feeder of Mr. John Newell, of this city, in regard to the rneasuro of protécﬁon their construction affords. In the trials to which we subjected them, we endeavored, without effect, to produce explosions of the vapor of the ﬂuid mixed witlt air, and to burst them by the pressure ofthe yapor alone. The principle adopted by Mr. Nowell is that of the well known Davy Lamp. lie has 3.0 combined the parts, that we are satisﬁed that all risk of explosive action is remove .

Mr. John Nowell. of Boston, has exhibited to mo ii Lamp, and also containing vessels, furnished with wire gauze protectors, upon the principle of Davy’s Safely Lamp for minors s used boil; these instruments before me with inﬂarriniuble ﬂuids, and in both, when set on ﬁre, the ﬂame wits arrested b the wire gauze, which is coated with silver. If the instruments are faithfully constructed, and carefully attended to, so that the wire gauze does not suffer in- jury from corrosion, wear or violence, I atn of opini. on that the protection will prove effectual against ex. plosion. Nothing short of this conviction would in- duce rue to countenance the continued use of the burning ﬂuids, so called. usl have thou ht the ought to be entirely discarded, if not prohibited from use; so frequent and dreadful are the accidents occa- sioned by ignorance und carelessness. In every case. glass lamps should be given up; and those of metal substituted, on account of the danger of fracture.
