coiumns to ventilate a qnestion which has of late considerably engrossed the minds ot the people of the Third District -f Queen's County.
During the last session of the Local Legis- lature, a bill was brought up to *‘ Remove the Court from Ten Mile House to Mount Siewart.” Tie Government, “strangely enough, gave their assent to the bill, its miscarriage, alone prevented its taking effect. Now Mr. Editot, when this court was established in its present location, I believe we had as wise men controlling the destinies of the State, as at present? They saw fit to locate the Court at Ten Mile House, as the most central part of the cis- trict, and [ fail to see what has transpired to cause its removal. it is situated as near the centre of the district as possible, which no doubt is the proper place >a platform 13 erected onthe railway for its special ae commodatien, and daring the winter by crossing the ice, the people of Fort Augus tus are brought much nearer to it than to Mt, Stewart.
The removing of the Court to Mt. Stewart may be an advantage to some few indivi- duals. But this is not sufficient cause for placing the residents of Lots 34 and 35 unier such aninconvenience. For tustance a man from Covehead or Tracadie, who might have a case in court, would be com- pelled to travel a distance of fifteen or six- teen miles. Then there would also ve the additional mileage as well,
Were there a sufficient reason fur such an action it could be excused; as yet there has been no cause shown. No doubt a petition was presented to the Hieuse last session praying for this court to be removed. But I am of opinion that it did not set forth the real cause. The petition had indeed many signatures, many more than signers, which may be proven by the evidence of parties whose names are appended to it, but, avow that they never signed it. Such a spurious document merits verv little attention from any Government.
For the information of the public I might mention the veal cause of this agitation. Around that locality are many gentlemen eager to serve their country, to whom the office of Clerk of the Court would be very acceptable. Already they havea nami%s cent staff of constables, well tried men.
7% * * * % ¥* In view of the good effects of the National Policy and the experience people have had with such characters, it is to be hoped that Mt. Stewart will cease to be famons for its sveing. Mr. MacDonald, M. P. P., will, no doubt, favor the project, and it is said that it is one of the stipulations, of his election campaign. Mr. Shaw pursues a similar course; but he should not so soon forget the warm support he received from the electors of the western portion “oT the district. hould he assent to a measure so unpopular and so detrimental to the in- terests of his constituents, he will meet with a just chastisement at their hands.

The London (G. B.) Bullionist of August 7th says: ‘‘ The metropolis has been de- nuded of a portion of its banking capital by the necessity to meet debis to foreign countries. We have at last begun to feel the crippling effects of au import business that has teo largely outstripped our ex- ports.” This statement of a high authority is significant.
MARKETS.
N thiscity, the prices of oats range from 36 to 38 cents per bushel; and the market ia not being supplied. In Liverpool, G, B., oata sell at 6s. 2d. per 100 Tbs.; in St. Jolin, at 40 cents; in New York, at 383 to 49 cents; in Montreal, at 29 to 30 cents, Potatoes are still flat and unprofitable; and there is little doing in the sale of other produce for export. ‘The Montreal Gazette of the 25th inst., reports that the irreguiar- ity in the price of pork in Chicago becomes more striking as the endof the month ap- protwhes. To day it advanced to $19, Oc- tober, and November delivery declined from \7}: per bbl. to $11.60, exhibiting a dis- parity of 87.40 per bbL, which is ont of all proportion to the difference which ex- ists between the price of the two months’ deliveries when the market is in its normal condition. This enormous premium apon cash pork is tov well known to be due to the control which certain capitalists have over the market, and it is said they will put the price up To $20 before they are through with the deal. The following are Montreal quotations for provisions, on the 24th inst :

A notable feature of the week’s business is the export, by Messrs. Carvell Bros.,- of 2,250 sheep, to Great Britain. We hope this venture will prove remunorative, Had the sheep been shipped from Charlotte- town direct, it would almo-t certainly have been highly so; but they have had to be sent abroad for shipment, and the costs are thereby greatly increased,
Tne report that the revolt of the natives in South Africa has become really danger- ous, is coufirmed. It is said that the natives beyond Pietermaritzburg, the capita! of Natal, 50 miles from Port Natal, made an attack on tie white residents and such natives as remained faithful to the Cape Government, burning. vuildings, pil- lagjng and outraging women; that ‘he most horrible atrocities ate reported and the insurgents are complete masters of the situation ; that the Colonial authorities are in need of assistance ; that unless reinforce- ments can reach them af once, the situation of the handful of men commanded by Col. Clark, is considered hopeless. This is cer- tainly a very bad state of affairs. No doubt there is great excitement in the Mother Country.

Lerr Beniny.—A number of passengers eame from Charlottetown in the steamer Horcesier, bound for Boston, when they found that, owing to the storm, the steamer, would be delayed, left the ship and decided to remain on shore all night, On going to the pier on Sunday morning, no Horcester was to be seen, she having sailed at midnight. The disappointed ones now regret that they did not stop on board, aud put up with the inconveniences of a bunk, instead of seeking a comfortable hotel for the night. Several others who had taken passage in ber irem this cily, were also left behind from the same cause.— Halifaw Herald,

A ‘battle of the books” is progressing in Halifax. Senator Almcn has a book of ureat age ; and one of the newspapers said it was the oldest book in Canada. Where- uoon Hon. S L. Shannon avows that he has a copy of ‘* Petrarch’s Sonnets ” print- ed at Venice in the year 1564, and Dr. J. BR. Akins states that he has books of the year 1471, and says that there are in King’s College Library, Windsor, more than forty volumes with dates previous to the year 1500. Again, Mr. M. A. Dun- can, of Grand Pre, boasts a Latin Bible published in 1557. And so the battle goes, i i
At the meeting of the Supreme Court at Pictou, Judge Weatherbe, who presided, was presented with an address. The Grand Jnry found true bills against Wm. Rudlands, of Stellarton, for shooting a cow ; against two boys named Wilson and fockhart fur killing a mare ; and against Charles Shaw, for stealing money. No bill was found against Jas. -W. McDonald, Peter MeDonald, or John OU Brien. At the trials a verdict of not guilty was re- turned against Wilson ; and guilty, against Shaw.

The Toronto Globe now understands that tie Pacific Railway Syndicate will receive for completing the road from end te end in ten years, twenty million doilars and twenty wiltion acres of land. And an ex- change remarks, if these are the main con- ditions of the bargain, they will certainly command the approval of the Canadian people. <a> .
