Ir is all times an agreeable task to congratu- late, whatsoever the sutfcct of congratulation may be, but by a conventional tacit agreement among Englishmen and their descendants, the weather is par ezvcllence, a topic that never tires. Our first salutation is “ good morning " or “ good day,” which has given occasion to foreigners to remark, that a line day in England is such it rarity, that the either of thankfulness or of prayer. Our salu- tation of good morning or good da is either, say they. meant as ii sign of inutua rejoicing because the day is ﬁne. or imprecatory, that is, “ may it he a good day or a good morning," for the expression is equally in use whether the weather be fair or foul. In the East, atiiong the Arabians and some others, the salutation is, Salam Alicoom, “ is it eace ."’ to which the reply is Alicoom Salem. " it is peace,” and this arises from the hand of‘ the descendants of Ishmael being against every man, and every man's hand being against them ; like our “good day,” it has DBCOIIIO the usual salutation in the crowded city or the desert plain, whether clo- thed in robes of peace, or nrmcd from head to heel, main reunions :1 nos moutons. We intended to congratulate our readers on on the ﬁneness of the weather, it is almost im ossihle to conceive liner. With a. glorious right sun shining directly over us, giving fulness and ripeness to all the fruits of the earth; its ex- treme ardor is tempered b refreshing breezes, which makes it almost impossible to resist spending the greater art of the day in the open air.
