To a person, who for instance, relied on the Charlottetown Patriot fer his information, and who must have come to the conclusion that the whole Island was about depopn- lated, a waste and howling barren, if net a wilderness, a personal acquaintance with the prosperity existing would be surpris- ing.
A gentleman from the Island who was interviewed the other day, in reply toa question asked if there were not a great many farms left unoccupied by parties leaving the Province, replied : ‘‘ Oh, no;
occasionally «a discontented farmer sels off and goes to the States
vr to Manitoba; but his place is quickly taken up by some enterprising feilow who does well.” He continued: ‘I have known well to do farmers, who were yearly putting money in the bank, sell off and go west. Though they do not always succeed in the west, people of this class rarely come back, as they could not repurchase their properties nearly so low as they sold them.’ This, then, is about the way the matier stands. Some people were not born to be contented, or remain in one place a lifetime though by so doing they would be better off. It is largely fer this reason that we find in Canada or New Brunswick, Englishmen, Scotchmen, Italians, Jews, Frenchmen, And Americans. But if you goto these respective countries, you will in all of them find some Canadians, and thus is the equili. brium maintained.

Recruits for Salt Lake.
Among the steerage passengers of the ‘* Nevada,” which arrived at Castle Garden yesterday, were 338 Mormon converts from foreign lands, ea route to Salt Lake City. Elder John Rider, one of those in charge of the modern saints, said that the party con- sisted of 147 Scandinavians, 134 English and Scetch, 40 Swiss and 17 American saints, the latter being returning elders who have been abroad as missionaries. The converts were distinguished from pre- vious batches who have arrived here, by the large number of children accompany- ing them. Few of the women were either young or comely. A number of very old people were in the party, several between the ages of seventy-five and eighty years. An incident of an exciting nature teok place in the Garden just after the Mor- mons had been landed. They were crowded together at one side of the Rotunda, in keeping wit® their invariable custom of holding aloof from the Gentiles, when one of the missionaries of an orthodex denomi- nation—-one of those permitted by the Commissioners of Emigration to attend daily at the Garden—approached a knot of the saints and soon got into a discussion regarding polygamy, a doctrine for which the missionary expressed the utmost ab- horrence. One of the English Mormon converts was defending the creed, when the inissionary interrupted to ask the ques- tion :—-
‘“Do you know, young man, by whom polygamy was established ?”
‘‘ Certainly,” was the reply, ‘* by God Almighty Himself.’
‘‘You are wrong, young man,” the mis- sionary replied, ‘‘you are indebted for your doctrine to Cain, the first murderer ! ”
Upon this the missionary, it is said, was roughly seized by the shoulder and erder- ed away by one of the Mormon elders. An angry crowd of Mormons quickly gathered and there was some excitement. The missionary quietly retreated in the confusion.—New York Herald, 17th.

Strange Muvements of Spaniards.
THE DISCOVERY MADE BY THE BIRKENHEAD PULICE—THE QUEER STORY TOLD BY THE ARRESTED.
The police who were on duty Tuesday night, 16th inst., at Birkenhead, near the Woodside ferry, which connects Birken- head with Liverpool, had their attention attracted to the suspiciexs move nents of three men who were carrying Sacks towards the magnificent docks surrounding the Woodside basin. The men seemed anxious to escape observation, and proceeded fur- tively from point to point, keeping as much 2s possible within the shadow of buildings or vessels. Apprehending some illegal pro- ceedings, the police made a descent upen and arrested the men. They at first at- tempted to escape, but seeing themselves overpowered, surrendered to the officers. On examination, one of the men, who ap- peared spokesman for the party, gave his name as Fernandez, and said he was a Spaniard, and offered the police a sovereign to be released, saying that the sacks con- tained revelvers to be shipped to Spain, and that he and his companions were entire- ly innocent of any intention to commit any crime whatever. Not satisfied with this explanation, the police detained the men and opened the sacks, which were found

to contain six ewt. of gun powder packed in canisters. The prisoners were arraigned next merning in the Police Court. Fer- nandez stuck to his story that the, powder was intended for sale on the Spanish coast, and the other men said nothing, Fernandez stating that they were in his employ and
}new nothing of the nature of what they
carried. There was no positive evidence before the Court to disprove the Spaniard’s statement, and he was !et off with a fine of £10. The other two men were discharged. lt is understood that the police have orders to follow and watch them closely, im"ex- pectation of arriving at the truth and possibly preventing a great crime and dis- aster. Fernandez’s story is regarded as only a tale he had prepared for the emer- gency which befell him. The powder was detained.

At Milwaukee, Wis., on Thursday night a mob of several hundred men and boys nade an attack upon the Rink, one of the largest and finest buildings of its class in the country, and razed it to the ground, The police did not interfere, and it was carried off piecemeal. The city has had trouble in getting the leassee te surrender his lease in order that an exhibition build- ing might DEPATEGM'the ground, which is owned by the city.
They have Sunday Schools in Deadwood to rescue the small boys from the wicked- ness of going fishing on Sunday,and recent- ly when rival schools wanted the same ground for a picnic, the superintendents tried to stab each other, the men teachers clawed each other’s clothes off, the lady teachers pulled hair and the children threw stones and lunch baskets at each other. The wicked boy who wouidn’t go to Sun- day School inissed seeing all this fun.
Last week was a busy one in Toronto, The Bee Keepers Association held their convention. and the British Methodist Episcopal Church their conference; the Good Templars bad their Grand Lodge; the Kuights of Malta their Chapter General; and the Oddfellows their monster procession and reception, in addition to all which the Toronto Exhibition was in full blast, while the City Council entertained the corpora- tion of Buffalo, but failed to satisfy the corporation of Rochester.
Hermann the wizard, played a great trick upon the Lieut. Gov. of Ontario on.Thurs- day. Both of those distinguished persons visited the Toronto Zoological gardens at the same time. Hermann went up to the jovernor and unceremoniously taking off His Honor’s hat pulled out of ita large cabbage and a lot of money. The Governor looked around him in a terrible helpless way with astonishment, alarm and indigna- tion struggling for the mastery.
On the evening of the 14th near Rivers- dale, Bruce County, Ont., two women and their children, who had gone into the woods to pick acorns, were attacked by a bear. The women took up the yeunger children in their arms and got away, but a boy, about five years of age, son of a farmer named Charles Symens, was seized by the ferocious brute. When assistance came the brute made offand the child was found still alive, but dreadfully mangled. His entrails
were torn out, and the ribs were broken ©
from the back, and the flesh eaten off in large quantities. The poor little fellow died shortly after:
