AcctpENT.—As one of the passengers on the Island boat was disembarking at Point Du Chene on the 29th, he got his right leg caught between the wharf and the vessel. His knee cap was fractured. When the train arrived at Moncton, the man was taken to the Pheenix Hotel, and Dr. Chandler was called. The young fellow was suffering very much, — Moncton Transcript.

A Youne Woman's Scicmpe.—A young woman named Armanda Cook, daughter of Samuel Cook, of Gay’s River, N. 3., com- mitted suicide a few days ago by drowning herself in the river near that place. The body was found in the water the next day, about a mile from her father’s residence. The young woman is said to have been slightly de- ranged for some time.

Tue Penobscot Indians, who have been a part of the history of Maine for thre hundred years. have intermarried until they have be- come almost white. Oldtown, the seat of their mission, has decreased from a population of eight thousand in 1623 to a mere hamlet of a few hundred souls in 1883.

Tue Dean of Bangor has been fulminating against the tea pot. He affirms that the tea-| kettle is the natural precursor of the gin- bottle. Speedy Justice.

CONCLUSION OF O'DONNELL'’S TRIAL—H® IS FOUND GUILTY OF WILFUL MURDER AND SENTENCED TO DEATH.

The evidence in O’Donnell’s case was concluded on Saturday, and arguments of counsel were made. The case was given to the jury at seven p. m., and at nine a ver- dict of wilful murder of James Carey was rendered. Judge Denman thereupon sen- tenced O'Donnell to death. After delivery of sentence of death O'Donnell sprang to his feet shouting ‘‘three cheers for Ireland. Good-bye to the United States; to hell with the British and the British crown.” He was dragged out of the court room by the police. The prisoner will remain at Newgate where he will be hanged probably on De- cember 17th Ample precautions have been taken to prevent his rescue. Two wardens will remain with O’ Donnell night and day. The result of the trial was eagerly awaited by Irish circles in Loudon, where it was generally expected that the verdict would be manslaughter. Some of the league branches haye resolved to form a committee and memoralize Harcourt, home secretary, to commute the sentence.

Schaefer, now going on in New York, appears to be a highly exciting affair. It is a six, — tournament. In the first two nights | Schaefer secured a lead of 190. Vignaux, how- ever, ran ahead 227 last night, making his total lead 57 points, the score being Vignaux, 1,800 ; Schaefer, 1,743. Three nights more will decide the conte-t.

ComMPouNDING Friony.—Last week the residence of Mr. Robert Pollard, North River, was entered and over fifty-five dollars in cash

W. J. Horrow, of Halifax. is applying for s patent for an invention which promises to be of great service, and which should bring the ingenious inventor a handsome reward. The article is an improved branch of fireman's hose, which it is claimed will be instrumental in saving the lives of firemen who may be in dan- ger of suffocation while in a burning building. The attachment—a sort of fanner worked by the water—will supply fresh air, no matter how dense the smoke or how intense the heat. [t can also be applied with equal effect in re covering exhausted or suffocated inmates of burning buildings.

4 Larce Lumpgr’ Conrract.—The St. Croix, N. B., Courier says:—The largest single contract ever made by St. Croix lumbermen is that entered*into between Messrs. F, H. Todd & Sons, of the one part, and Messrs. Tracey, Murchie & Love, of the other part, for the cutting and yarding of 7,000,000 feet of logs, during the coming winter. The ground to be operated on covers a block, siz miles square, on the Wissattaquoik stream, in Piscataquis county, Maine, and is bounded on the north- east ecrner by Traveller's mountain, on the northwest by a lake called Big Pond, on the zouthest by Turner’s mountain, 3,500 feet high, and on the southwest by a spur of Mount Katahdin. It is estimated that there are 100,000,000 feet of lumber in the bleck, the land being what is known as black land and covered with a splendid growth of spruce, cedar, pine and fir.

Once a fortnight the room is open to the public, when juste, veadings and addresses on moral, educational, scientitic and other sub- jects, entertain and instruct the large numbers who attend. Mr. Johnston states that, to make the Reading Room a continued success, he will require a constant supply of fresh read- ing, and hopes all cone res ee will not forget his efforts to supply good and protit- able reading to the people of his district, and thereby to cultivate a taste for such literature as will elevate and improve the mind. Any papers, magazines, or books, old or new, mest thankfully received. Illustrated papers, par- ticularly much needed. Parcels may _be left at the bookstore of H. A. Tue London Canadian Gazette says:—‘‘The colonial tropbies in the Lord Mayor’s Show on Friday last proved, as.was to be expected not the least attractive feature of the pageant. Tae Canadian car to which the place of honor was justly assigned, elicited hearty cheers now and again, and certainly compared most favor- able with those that followed it. Mr. ALEXANDER ALLEN, a respected towns- man returned home from Willmar, Minnesota, on Friday, where he met many Islanders, He is of opinion that a farmer here who is at all comfortable should stay home and not risk the chance of a strike oyt there. He says that farmers there, in beginbing life work are under as many disadvantages as here. He believes that young men with a good trade and able to endure hardship will succeed as there is plenty of work in that new country. — Summerside Pioneer.

Tue New Comet.—This interesting celes- tial visitor is now visible to the naked eye and fortunately is not hard to find. A pril- lian{ stay sbjces ja the northwest as soon as darkness veils the earth. This is Vega or Alpha Lyre, and may be certainly known by two smail stars forming with an equilateral triangle, as wellas by being the only first magnitude star in the vicinity. About thir- teen degrees north of Vega is a red star of the first magnitnde, known as Gamma Darconis. Between these two stars lies the present path of the comet. It is now n6t far from one-third of the intervening distance south and a little west to Gamma, and is moving rapidly toward Vega.

NewrouxDLAnp claims the proprietorship of a large portion of Labrador. Years ago Quebec owned the entire frozen region, After- wards, in 1763, Labrador was annexed to Newfoundland. Ten years later Canada came into possession again. In 109 the prize was restored to Newfoundland, and in that colony it has been ever since. The Newfoundlanders have a court of civiland crimiual jurisdicticn there, and they levy customs duties. Nobody is likely to envy N ewfoundlaad hey possession. Still, the ficheriea are rich. In one year the fishermen of Newfoundland have captured on the Labrador coast 400,000 quintals of codfish, 60,000 barrels of herring, and 300 or 400 tierces of salmon.
