The annual Christmas concert of Union Commercial College was held Friday under the direction of Mr W. D. Fraser, principal. Mr. Arnold L. Hubley. vice-princi- psi, and Miss Mary Maclnnis. a member of the teaching staff.

The first number on the program ccnsisted of a group of songs pre- sented. by the U. C. C. Choristers under the direction of Mr. I-Iubley. The first three selections were ”Angels From The Realms Of Glory, "Joy To The World" and "Angels We Have Heard On High," followed by an opening address of welcome by Mr Fraser. and pros- entation of diplomas and certif- icates to students in attendance since January. 1953. - The following students received diplomas: Peggy McGee (Honor). Thelma Campbell, Ada Campbell. Joan Gillie. Sadie M.acBhail. Phyl- lis Gallant, Sadie Mac-Fadyan, Jean Bell. Velda Martin and Priscilla Griffith. Certificate winners were June Gardiner. Allison wood and Alma MaoKinnon. Awards f r scliolastic achievement were pr- sentad to Peggy McGee, Thelma Campbell and Phyllis 'Gallaat.

The third selection on the pro- gram was a group of western songs sung by Miss Pauline Me- Intyre, a member of the student body. A film was shown to the audience of approximately 1'15 students. their parents and friends. The film was entitled U.0.C. and You." and was produced and dir- ected by Mr W. D. Fraser. It eon- aisted of the student body and staff of 1052-53 and was in color. The fifizh selection was a piano and guitar duet by Misses Shirley Mednwen and Pauline Mscfntyre. Following this interesting half of the program the audience joined In singing a g-rmrp of Christmas carols such as "Hark The Herald Angels sing. "It Came Upon The Midnight, Clear,” and others.

Miss Elaine Macvwen follow- ed with two am? entitled "Mock- ing Bird Hill. Mansion on the Hill," and Jambalaya.” Once again the Ohoristera were brought back and rendered "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks. "O Holy Night. "O Come All Ye Faithful." (joined by the audience) and "Silent Night." The presentation of gifts Santa Claus to all students in attendance at Union Covrnrner..:.l College followed and proved to be one of the main num- bars of the program. Vancouver "Ghosts" Iiaii Traffic Offenders In Safety campaign.

VANCOUVER, (CP)-A sharp de- cline in traffic accidents has re- sulted herc from a police safety drive. "Ghosts" are giving motor- ists and pedestrians the jitters.

When the 34th traffic fatality for 1953 was recorded Nov. 16. the 1952 total of traffic dezitlis was equalled. Then Chief Constable Walter H. Mulligan decided on an all-out safety campaign.

The "ghosts" were increased. Po- lice in civilian clothes now cruise the streets in unmarked cars and

light trucks. nabbing traffic viola- tors. whether drivers or pedes- trians.

Accidents Decrease

In two weeks accidents declined 33 per cent. injuries 26 per cent. Three pedestrians were killed, and another. injured. earlier, died. The traffic fatality figure of 38 re- mained constant during the first two weeks of December.

”We will use every device and method within the bounds of our, imagination and the law to appre- hend the charge any individual! who risks injury to himself or creates a traffic hazard," said Chief Mulligan announcing the drive.

Civic hospital records back up the campaign. The weekly aver- age of 65 persons treated for emer- gcncy traffic injuries has dropped to 25; injuries being treated are less severe than before ghost cars were used.
