Souris Notes,

Seventeenth of May, eighteen hundred and eighty-seven, and Souris has a water- scape of the frozen regions. The ice, how- ever, is vanishing—still vanishing—will soon be gone,

The warmth of the day suggests a strange blending of the seasons—summer on shore, winter on the waters; but somehow or other, the seals like the arrangement, and peep from the briny deep at the mortals who sport the skins of their slaughtered relations—the seals’ relations.

Since the writers’ last visit, several new stores have been opened. Pretty Souris takes a front rank in the march of improve- ment. Altogether, it is about the only town this end of the Province which looks really alive. During the last two yeara, business premises have almost doubled iu number, and the importations of the sea- son cause a display creditable to the place, and shows that Souris is in no way behind in a spirit of enterprise. As far as King’s County is concerned, it may well claim the title of ‘*Commercial Capital.” The mer- chants are wide awake, not overdosed with “the rest and be thankful spirit,” nor cramped bythe slightest touch of ‘‘old fogyism.”

Although considerable activity is dis- played in various quarters, the season of the year causes a certain amount of busi- ness stagnation. Just now, the backbone of the country— the farmers — bear the burden ot home work, casting seed for the golden harvest, hence the comparative quiet of the shops. By-and-bye business wil! be booming, and the sun will smile on the captured finny tribe, gathered crops, and dollar bills.

Amidst all the changes which we see, it may well be said: **Some remembered faces and voices are no more.” A few have sought other lands, swelling the world’s list of wanderers ; others have lowered to time’s decree and sleep in mother earth. Hearts of friendship and love wish the wanderer's well, and the souls of the living left are brimful of the blissful hope which breathes the prayer that the loved voices of earth, now hushed to mortal ear, may mingle in the songs of angels, away in the eternal rest, where all is day and full of better life. Among the living, old voices, old faces, old friends, bring a warmth to the heart, which all the ice floating on the shore cannot chill.

The popular Custom House official of this Port, if all reports be true, must feel somewhat rejoiced at the idea that Uncle Sam will not require so much of his atten- ‘tion during the coming season. Americans are—so they say—‘‘awfully” fond of Souris.

It is just a question whether, some day or other, they won't hitch on the’ United States, and tow this ‘‘city” off. Canada stands in the

way, as regards that arrangement, but now, perhaps, that fishery measures are reported somewhat easier, (pending final decisions) and customs officials have not so much to bother about, things in general may be comparatively smoother, business may be brisker and everybody feel happier. One thing, however, is certain. Yankee or ro Yankee, fishery treaty or no treaty, or ‘any other man,” the customs officer of Souris knows his duty and how to do it.

A brisk summer's business is expected here, and the pleasure seeker is not for- gotten either. Perhaps the writer might be ** hung, drawn and quartered” for say- ing that beautiful as Souris is, if enterprise, capital, etc., would goa little further, the place might be made a very paradise. The situation is all that could be desired. Nestling on the very edge of the waters, amid the life giving breezes of old ocean, and bountifully blessed by nature’s gifts, this is one of the spots, among the many gems which deck ‘‘the Garden of the Gulf,” second to none among the ‘‘quiet shades and pretty nooks and sea-girt haunts” of the Province. Asa health resort it takes a first place, and during the season under proper arrangements, sea bathing can be tully enjoyed. The magnificent beach which stretches between the Souris East and West, affords an evening promenade rarely surpassed, and here too, surf bathing could be all the rage. Of course there are some contrary mortals in society, who can- not help being sick, no matter where they are—it is to be hoped they will pardon the joke—to such I would recommend the three or four very excellent doctors of which the community can boats—collectively and individually. They know the materia medica just as well as Harvard, McGill or Edinburgh can produce, and come of that tribe; surely a sufticient recommendation for any profession. It is said that a steamer is expected to run here from the United States, or some other foreign country, the summer months, touching at other ports, a circumstance which will, no doubt, bring a largely increased number of visitors here, and let me say they will come among a gemial and hospitable people, perhaps not much touched by the shallow, so-called refinement of some city life, but full of that pleasant, happy, easy, all-at-home feeling, which has more genuine worth and true humanity in it than all the gilded tin- sel and puppet etiquette of the ginger- bread thing, commonly called Of course there is society,and society—-wise heads can discriminate.

All around the operation of spring clean- ing is going on, both inside and out. This is an arrangement which is said to drive husbands mad and bachelors melancholy. One poor mortal has just explained that when he visited his best girl her head was enshrouded in a pillow case, and her body enveloped in her great-grandfather’s grand- uncle’s long-tailed blue coat, and a white was brush in her hand, with which he was unceremoniously greeted—the reader is assured, that looks blue. Another ** poor married man” is a wanderer from home, | the tail of his black coat somehow or other

Still another wanders rou d, 8 »mething indescribable, all the colors of the rainbow deeply impressed, one would imagine by all the odoriferous nicknacks fancied or real, true or false, of a late deeply touched correspondent. Such is spring cleauing, and such is lile.

‘ In matters of religion the community is certainly not wanting. Now four houses of worship adorn the landscape— the Catholic Church Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist. The paster of the Baptist body, Mr. McLeod, your correspondent is informed, preached his farewell sernfon on last Sunday afternoon, and goes at mission- ary work, Another gentlemen of the same name occupied the Presbyterian pulpit, Mr. Cameron’s, in the evening. Mr. Archibald Lord returns shortly among his old friends of Tryon. For the present be has taken tu *‘a life on the ocean wave ” and as Captain Lord his friends wish him every success. The building formerly known as the ‘* Souris Temperance Hotel,” purchased by Mr. Carlton, is being refit ed fora private dwelling. Another addition is an oyster saloon, and lovers of the luscious bivalve can satisfy themselves tu any amount fresh and sweet, at Boysnei's. Notwithstanding excellent hotel accommo- dation, as far as it goes, if present dreams of summer traffic should turn out to be a reality, Souris will require additional powers of reception. The old established local barber, Mr. Thomas Mayo, has arrived home after a five or six months’ cruise, and the ‘“‘running” of one of the best establishments in the Dominion at Truro, Nova Scotia. May his shadow never grow less. Commercial travellers are on the increase, and display every type of human- ity from Darwin’s monkey to the full blown dude—truth to tell, however, some of them would pass for parsons, being neatly dressed and well starched—they are civil merry fellows, up to business, and like a joke as well as a good order. Several stores formerly closed, are now ful! of business life, whether attributed to N. P., or the other fellow ; and now it is said that at no very distant day, Souris will give King’s County a newspaper of her own, a local organ, something much needed, from every point of view. Where “everything is lovely” one can- not enumerate too much, More Anon.

Prohibition vs. True Temperance Again.

Srr,—In addressing you on the above sub- ject on the 13th inst., | wrote under a pres- sure of business, and as a consequence I find now that I omitted the verse in Gal. 4th, it was the 18th, This may help T. T. to learn the lesson.

Another item that I had intended calling his attention to more fully, was in my allu- sion to St. Thomas of Aquino, and without in any way, or in the slightest degree, stirring up areligious controversy. I disclaim any such attempt on my part. I will, therefore, only state that in my estimation St. Thomas of Aquino was not always given to the prac tice of the golden rule as laid down by the Saviour himself, ‘‘Whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you,” &c., &c., see Matthew 7-12, andhad T. T. left out his quotation from St. T. of A., ard given us one , from another saint who holds the position in ithe Church of Rome, not a saint-ship of man's | making, but a God made one bearing the name of Peter,whose utterances on the subject |of temperance may be found in the scriptures ‘as given us by his divinely inspired pen, it would no doubt be in some degree more ap- propos at the present juncture.

Now let T. T. turn over a new leaf in this year of grace 1887, and instead of him de- crying the C. T. Act of 1878 among and before his co-religionists, rather let him strive to help them to abandon the traftic even at the risk of aq id pre quo, rather than endeavor to strengthen them in an evil course, he would then be doing good to the body and soul

cursed traflic. It is admitted on every hand that this business in strong drink is an evil one, and that it brings in its train destruction, desolation, disease, and even death upon a rm many of our fellow-men. It is then the

uty of every right-minded person of this community, both male and female, to set their faces against the efforts at present being made to repeal the Act, until, at least, its place has been filled by something better. Now, let me ask T. IT. to read carefully and prayerfully, the saying of the wise man of the ‘olden time, Ecclesiastis, chap. 11-9. True ithe verse refers primarily to young men ; but then, neither T. T., nor you, nor 1, are too old to heed the lesson.

‘** Prohibition will always fail.” Not so fast, Mr. T. T. There is an instance of how and why it fails in that much be-lie-ed State of Maine. This is from the Portland Herald, of August 19th, 1886.

“*On Thursday of last week, the Sheriff | Visited a house where they suspected beer to ibe sold. They heard a shuffling and scurrying tp stairs. On going up they saw a very sick | woman in bed. Very sick, another woman present said she was; couldn't live twenty- four hours, the doctor said. “Oh!” the woman groaned, ‘I’m very bad! Oh! what dreadful pain I'm in.”

‘The Sheriff saw that she was in her work- ing dress, lying upon a mattress put upon ‘some chairs, unperfectly covered with a coarse rug, leaving shoes and lower part of dress ex- osed. The Sheriff said: ‘I think you can stand it if I lift upthis corner of the imat- tress.’ ‘No! no! I’mkilt entirely if you ‘touch that!’ The oflicer raised it and un- ‘covered a barrel of beer. ‘Oh you thavin’, murtherin’ villian! I'll have the damages of yer for murtherin’ a rdying woman, who hasn't hardly the brith of life in her body.’ ”

‘Prohibition doesn’t prohibit; more liquor sold in Portland than in New York, in pro- portion to population,” as Dr. Crosby says.
