Notwithstandingthe combined and strenuous exortinns ofthe fire depart- ment, the military, police. and others, nothing could stop the progress of the destructive element until it had consum- ed noarly the whole ofthe street. in which it originateddhe whole L’Aciea Chautier street, passed in St. Nicholas street, con- suming every house on both sides. frotu the premises occupied by Mr. Bethel, shoetnnker,on the one side,and the black- smith shop immediately opposite, down- ward to the new market, and ultimately reached the Goverrimcnt Fuel Yard, where it was not subdued until this morn- ing, after having destroyed, we are in- formed 500 cords of wood and 600 chal- drons of coals. The number of dwelling houses burned down is stated at thirty- six, exclusive of a number of out build- ings,antl theloss is estimated at £40,000. The origin of the fire is attributed to a man having gone into Mr. Simard’s han- gar with a pipe,a portion ofthe burning ashes in which had fallen among and ig- nited some loose straw or hay.

A rock, used as a land mark, and situated in front of Cape Gaspe, has disappeared,and the attention of ma- riners is called to the circumstance. The rock went by the following names occasionally, “ The Old Woman,” “ Ship Head” and “ Flower‘ Pot Rock.” The rack was much admir- ed by the cutious in such matters; its summit overhung its base in an ex- traordinary mannerg—the circumfer- ence of the latter is stated at l3 fa- thoms, of the former 350. The fall ofthe rock has caused a new passage for small vessels.

A young man, aged about twenty-one years, who had departed from the religion of Mohammad, has been barbaroust murdered by the spirituals of Constan- tinople, because he refused to abandon the christian faith. He tnet the blows of the bastinado with unshnlten faith.— Several days’ imprisonment,and frequent beating, failed to compel him to return to lslamism. At the place ofexecution he was exhorted to recent Christianity ; the first stroke was delayed, and the naked sword ivas shown hitn, but he persisted in his refusal. Twenty or thirty caves- scs were requested to strike the blow, but they refused ; and at last a man came and struck him four times without being able to sever the bead front the body ; at last he was thrown down in the most brutal manner, and his head sliced or sawed off. For three days was the body ofthis poor creature laid out on the pave- ment of the Baluk Bazaar, a ghastly spectacle. He lay flat on his breast with the bond stuck between his legs atthe farm, anti looking. as it were, ottt be- tween his thighs. The Armenian Patri- arch presentt-da petition to the Porte for the corpse, but it was torn up,and the body, after three days’ exposure. towed ottt to the middle of the Bospborus, and abandoned the current. The poor moo ther of the man sat for some time by the corpse, without shedding a tear; the idi- otcy ol'griefdepicted on her countenance is described by those that saw her to have been soul-harrowing.

Carma—The Boston Cottrier has re- ceived files of India papers,two days later ‘from Bombay. On l7th of March, Sir Charles Napier was about to march for Meerpore,a place 25 coss from Hydrabad, where the enemy were said to be assem- bled to the nutnber of 25,000; but it was thought they would not hazard an en- gagement. Brigadier Manson had been ordered to inspect the fort at Ahmed- nuggcr, to ascertain ifit was fit to he em- ployed as a residence of the Ameers Saide, who are to be sent there as state prisoners. Lord Ellenborough has issu- ed-a proclamation, directing the unser- viceable guns taken at Hydrabad, to be cast into a triumphal column, on which are to be inscribed the names of Sir Chas. Napier and officers, 8t.c., named in the despntches. The coast of Borneo is swarming with pirates, and H.M. ship Dido has sailed for that place probably with a view to arrest their doings.—
