of scientists, cranks and lunatics for reaching the North Pole has just been

sprung on the public by Admiral Makaroff, the well known explorer of the Northern Pacific. His plan is vothing more or less than to force a way tothe pole throvgb the intervening fields and mountains of ice by means ofa fleet of “ice-breakers.” It is declared by Admiral Makaroff that the ice thatshielus the pole could be forced with a ten thousand horse power ice breaker, and he even goes so far as to assert that with two ice breakers of ten thousand horse power be could force a pathway to the polein 12 days. The ice breakers that the admiral proposes to use in his at-

tempta to reach the pole are to be modells ed on the same lines as the steam ice crushers that are familiar to visitors at the port of Viadivostock, where they are jwith to force a passage through the necu-ed which that port is blocked for two months of the year.

expend a considerable sum in the purchase of ammunition and torpedoes for the mining of the harbours.

KILLED BY EATING SPIDERS.

Suicide of a Woman Serving a Life Sentence for Her Father's Murder.

Des Mornes, la., Oct 14.—Cora Smith, who wasserving a life sentence for the murder of ber father, killed herself by eat- ing live spiders, She had been trying for weeks tofiod a way to take her life, and seeing one day the spiders crawling on the walls of the prison yard, it occurred to her that they would serve. Sunday night she ate the spiders, and yesterday morning sbe was found dead in her cell. The bandker-~ chief with the remaining spiders were found by her side. Michael Smith, the father, was a prosperous railway engineer. Because he remonstraied with the wife and danghter about the life they led, they made several attempisto kill him His wife was convicted of his murder and sent to penitentiary for life. Shortly afterwards the daughter confessed that she, and not her mother, killed her father, and this sent bertothe penitentiary for life. The mother obtained a new trial, and was again convicted afew months ago.

Panis, Oct. 14.—The report of Lord Rosebery’s speech has attracted universal attention and caused considerable sensa- tion in politica] circles, as it is regarded as confirmatory of Lord Salisbury’s deter- mination to uphold the rights of England as prerented in the official correspondence published October 16. The general opin- ion of Frenchmen ie that the epeech does not improve the situation from their point of view.

Mr Delfosee, te Royal leader, in a letter published in the Gauloi , ays that at tie conclusion of the Chino-vapanese war, France unbesitatingly assisted Russia, and the time bas now come for Russia to repay that service by helping France against England. It is evident, he says, that it it should be necessary for England to go to war, France would be helpless alone. Ru sia is the only power that cao contemplate war with Koglaod with serenity, for she is invulnerable.
